Rating: G
Event: 400 word dash
Words: 404
Summary: The ballad of Liam and The Mad Knight of Berat
A/N: Uh, this is easily the weirdest fic I have ever written. I'm not entirely happy with how it turned out, but hey, it's all part of the learning process, right?
+_+_+_+
He sits upon his dappled mare at crossroads and at gates. He challenges any who pass. He says he does the Dark God’s work, he delivers the unjust. They say the Knight’s Ordeal broke him, he came out only knowing hate.
The Mad Knight of Berat.
Who challenges a phantom, a bogeyman, a ghost? Who calls for valor, for justice, for truth? Where do we turn when chivalry revolts? They say the Knight’s Ordeal broke him, he came out lost.
The Mad Knight of Berat.
He demands tribute and penance, in gold and girls and pain. It keeps the cities humble, he says. It keeps them from succumbing to petty pride and greed. They say the Knight’s Ordeal broke him, he came out not quite sane.
The Mad Knight of Berat.
Yet in the deepest shadows, a dragon always roars. The mad knight hears his challenge, and he laughs. Who are you to halt my work, to doubt the mastery of my sword? They say the Knight’s Ordeal broke him, he is always certain he deserves more.
The Mad Knight of Berat.
A dragon’s bark is only outmatched by a dragon’s bite. Stand down, young man, the dragon begs, or blood will surely spill. Aye says the knight, it shall be yours. They say the Knight’s Ordeal broke him, and he cannot lose a fight.
The Mad Knight of Berat.
The time and place is yours to choose, the dragon told him then. But know your work will end that day, and I’ll defeat you well. You truly jest, the mad knight said, a peasant with no sword. At sunrise I will see your guts, at the crossroads I ever guard. They say the Knight’s Ordeal broke him, and promised only a bloody end.
The Mad Knight of Berat.
And so the dragon met the knight, unhorsed and on the ground. The mad knight’s sword rang true that day, but the dragon met him fast. Such strength he had, to fell a horse with one swing of his iron arm! They say the Knight’s Ordeal broke him, and the truth would soon be found.
The Mad Knight of Berat.
The dragon was on him quickly, with little grace or charm. One fist, then two, and the mad knight fell, his breath a fleeting wisp. They say the Knight’s Ordeal broke him, but wise men know it was Liam Ironarm.
