Series: Draig
Title: Queen's Gambit
Rating: PG
Event: 4x100 What if Relay
Words: 400
Summary: Four scenes that might have happened if Jonathan had chosen a different queen.
1.
After Alanna had accepted Jonathan’s final, unexpected proposal of marriage, Liam had spent a great deal of time with Buriram Tourakom. Between the Lioness’ homecoming and the coronation and court, he had seen little enough of his more nobly inclined friends before this -- but now even Coram, always good for a drink before, was nowhere to be seen. Myles and Eleni had whisked him off for some secret role in the royal nuptials, and Liam found himself drinking alone.
Buri was as reassuring as the open road, as familiar as a night under the stars. And castles made her nervous.
2.
“I don’t understand it. I’m no expert, but that Josiane is crazy!” Alanna swallowed her brandy, slammed the glass on the table, refilled it.
“Kings are funny people,” Liam drawled. “Princes, too. They don’t always have to make sense.”
Alanna scowled into her drink. “But Josiane Rittevon? She’ll murder him in his sleep!”
An unwarranted memory surfaced. Liam was lost in the clash of steel and bronze, the heady tang of blood and brine. He suppressed a shudder and gulped his drink.
“I can promise he’ll never rest easy on his throne,” Liam told Alanna, “But these are the choices we make.”
3.
Enough strange things had happened in Tortall in recent years; many assumed that this was just another one of them. While Delia’s connection to Duke Roger (his plots, his resurrection) had certainly branded her as suspicious, she was no traitor. And so Prince Jonathan had taken Delia of Eldorne to wife under minimal protestation.
Liam had marched immediately to Roger’s quarters. He pounded on the door, but didn’t wait to be let inside. Roger was there. He didn’t look surprised.
“You did this,” said Liam. “I don’t know how yet, but I know you did.”
Roger only smirked. “Prove it.”
4.
“I thought you didn’t want to be Queen,” says Liam. His eyes never leave the fire.
“I didn’t. I don’t.”
“Yet you pine.”
“That’s not fair. I just thought I could be...I don’t know, useful on the throne. It was a stupid idea.”
“You aren’t just in love with Prince Jonathan? He’s prettier than most maidens,” Liam sneers.
“You know I’m not.”
It all shatters: His anger, his jealousy, his sneer. Liam breaks away from the fire and pulls Thayet tightly to him, raining kisses on her lovely face until they are both breathless.
“Good. Dragons are a jealous sort.”
