Title: Breaking up is hard to do Rating: G Prompt: #64 the one that got away Summary: Evin.
The key is to keep busy.
Keeping busy is easy when there are spidrens on the loose and bandits to chase over rocky ground, underbrush crackling under the swift hooves of his pony. Keeping busy is easy when he has a rider group to direct and decisions to make.
If the day's activities haven't exhausted him by the time he flings out his bedroll on the unforgiving ground, he lists the names and properties of poisonous plants while making a coin dance across the fingers of one hand, then the other. He moves onto the fifty-odd ways to craft a makeshift weapon. Trackings signs. Weather patterns. Defensive manoeuvres when confronted by a violent opponent.
Sometimes it still gets to him, when he's drifted into that strange lull between wakefulness and sleep, curled up under the sky.
But keeping busy is easy when morning comes. That's the heart of the problem, the reason he feels more alone--empty--than usual, giving orders and packing up camp.
He keeps busy enough not to wonder if Dom's struggling like he is, countless leagues across country. He doesn't wonder, because that would be two steps back instead of breaking away.
He gets promoted. He waits until he's back in his rooms at the barracks to break into bitter laughter, sits on his bed and puts his head in his hands and laughs.

Ohhhh. *pets Evin* Poor lad. This is desperately sad in a really subtle, understated way, and the bitter irony at the end is great.
