Title: Girl of Stone
Rating : PG-13 (some non-graphic violence)
Word Count: 366
Crossover: X-Men/Tortall
Summary (and any Warnings): All she wanted to do was rescue the poor kittens and leave, but now her skin is turning to stone, and she doesn't know what's happening.
Notes: Not in any particular X-Men verse. Also, what am I doing with my life?
The telltale grunts and screams of a fight bring him to the ally, but the sight of a woman with stone instead of skin, makes him hold back - its bad etiquette to interfere in stranger mutant's fight, and besides, she seems to be holding her own. All that goes out the window when, simultaneously, the stone turns to flesh, revealing a girl, no more than thirteen or fourteen and the boy she's fighting calls his friends over. He finishes the fight quickly, sending the boys home with nothing worse than bruises despite the itching of his claws under skin.
When he turns back to the girl, he sees her crouched and trying to open a tightly tied burlap sack. She's remarkably put together for a kid, but doesn't seem to notice his continued presence until he takes a step forward. She spins around, instinctively shielding the sack, which is now mewling pitifully, with her body. "Who are you?"
"Logan. You?"
Her face is neutral as she replies, "Kel."
He approves of her reticence. Too many of the people he's saved trust him immediately - and he is the good guy - but that's the basis of far too many cons for him to be comfortable with it. "Did you know you were a mutant?"
She pauses a moment before finally deciding that the query is harmless enough. "No, why?"
Logan grudgingly mentally thanks Scott for forcing him to carry a couple of the school's business cards. "If you need some place to go, or you want to learn how to control your powers, or whatever, call this number. Can you get home okay?"
"Yes, thank you," her voice is steady, but she's clutching the sack closer to her chest, betraying her fear.
"You sure?" He's pretty sure she's lying, but pressuring her too much will just make her bolt.
She nods and leaves, and he hears her begin to run right after she thinks she's out of sight.
He leaves and returns to the mansion a few days later, forgetting about Kel in favor of trying to keep various students and teachers from killing each other (and refraining from killing them himself) until a few months later when she shows up, suitcase in hand, kitten perched on shoulder, and blank mask firmly in place.
