The Emperor looks out on his prized university, with all the greatest mages, slaving away for his—yes his papa not yours anymore since that unfortunate dagger in your chest—approval.
Well, almost all the greatest mages.
Arram Draper was his best friend, his most prized advisor—such useful scapegoats now to the omnipotent Emperor Mage—once upon a time. They used to do everything together, in their youth. But Arram saw the darker side of Ozorne, the side that—power absolute power right in the palm of his hand—now controlled him, and he left—fled is a better word the spineless academic—and now Ozorne watches his best friend—so powerful if he would just own up to his true potential the cowardly insignificant boy—become his enemy, never quite able to face him directly.
A best friend who is a great rival, after all, is still—so fragile through his young apprentice the lovestruck weakling—a best friend.

Oooh, I like this. The prompt doesn't always have to refer to romance, after all. To Ozorne, it's a loss of both friendship and power... You do a great job of describing that here, I love the stream-of-consciousness interludes. Numair has such an interesting past!
