Title: Hardly Fleeting
Rating: PG
Prompt: #63 Kissing Frogs
Summary: It's not goodbye. Not yet.
It was odd how having a squire of her own made Kel reassess her choices. Every touch - which would normally have her skin break out in gooseflesh, his fingers running down her spine - now had her hesitating.
And of course he would notice. She accepted the mug from him and sat back in her chair, tucking her cold toes underneath her and letting the steam from the tea wash over her. After he had dressed himself, he sat on the edge of the bed.
The fall of his hair and the slow angle of his smile were as dear to her as her shield, her honour. She didn't want to lose his respect or his affection, but most of all, she didn't want to lose him.
"What makes you think you're going to lose me?" Lindhall asked, apparently amused by her rambling.
Kel felt herself flush; she hadn't realised she had been talking aloud. A squire certainly tends to dull one's mind and loosen one's tongue, she thought dryly.
She exhaled quietly and tried to gather the words she wanted. "Lindhall, you're old enough to be my father. People would talk. And if it ends between us, I don't want there to be any bad feelings. You're one of the most important people in my life."
Surprisingly, he laughed. He must have seen the expression on her face, for he stood and took her hand, setting her mug of tea aside. The look of fondness that crossed his face made her chest tighten unbearably.
"Keladry," he said. "I harbour no illusions about our relationship. You're young. One day you'll want something that I won't be able to offer, and I respect that you recognise that."
The way his thumb ran over the back of her hand was utterly distracting, as was the heat in his eyes. That they could be having this conversation was unfathomable to begin with, but more than that, she couldn't believe that he was being so...kind.
She gripped his hand in hers. "I don't want to lose you, Lindhall."
"You won't." He smiled and leaned in to kiss her, softly. "No matter the future. We have time."
