My friends and sisters keep telling me to see Maleficient, but I so far haven't gotten around to it (I'm really bad at seeing films...).
I recently re-watched Strictly Ballroom after seeing the musical in Sydney. I love that film so much! And now the musical! All the sparkles! Wish I could dance like that...

So I was sick for several days and watched a lot of films. There were others than I've listed here, too, but I no longer remember what they were because sickness.
Anywho, the rewatches: The Matrix Anastasia (all my love and childhood, man...) Kick-Ass
The newbies: The Brothers Bloom, which I loved. It was overly quirky in places but I needed overkill and aesthetically it was lovely, and what's not to love about Adrien Brody and Rachel Weisz on an intercontinental crime caper packed with literary references? Also did I mention Adrien Brody? It Could Happen to You Valentine's Day Safe Haven ^ These three were just blatant chick flick but whatever. I liked It Could Happen To You most.
I also tried Blue Jasmine but gave up on it pretty early on because I found it to be too similar to A Streetcar Named Desire, but without being anywhere near as good. Like Cate Blanchett was as wonderful as ever, but Woody Allen is no Tennessee Williams.

Watched The Other Woman on the plane. Bits of it were funny, but overall I felt the plot could have been tweaked to better show the character.

I watched Parental Guidance the other night. That's the one where Bette Midler and Billy Crystal have to babysit their grandkids for a week. It wasn't the most brilliant movie ever made, but it was pretty great Then again, anything with Bette Midler in it is OK in my book .

FINALLY finished watching the BBC mini series of Pride and Prejudice. I'd seen 3 of the 6 episodes previously; watched the other 3 this past weekend. It was good. I liked it. Jennifer Ehle makes a very good Elizabeth Bennet.

It's a TV show, not a movie, but I'm watching Rosemary and Thyme and it's pinging my Emelan feelings, because it's about two gardeners who are amateur detectives.

Everyone says that to me, even people who know me really well, somehow always forgetting that I'm not a big movie/TV person - in that, it's not one of my top forms of entertainment. It takes a lot of effort for me to commit to watching 6 hours of something! I like Rosemary and Thyme. I hadn't thought of the Emelan connection before, but I feel it's very well suited to (fem)slash

Saw the documentary "The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness" at Dendy, a documentary about Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki and the making of The Wind Rises. It was really interesting! Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki are really interesting people.

Saw Into the Woods today.
I really liked it, but it's pretty clear that a lot of content from the original stage production has been cut. Unfortunately this means a lot of the movie was just really bizarre.
And I can't believe I'm saying this, but it really could have done with less singing and more plot. I think they could have gotten rid of a few of the original songs and added more of the original content. I think it would have made more sense that way.

^I'm really sad but not surprised to hear that about Into the Woods. I'm not a big musical fan but I always loved that one as a kid (I used to hang around the national drama school library as a kid and read plays with one of my friends. I was always Red Riding Hood when we were doing Into the Woods because she was my favourite).
I finally saw Guardians of the Galaxy today. I get why everyone likes it. I'm also really grateful Marvel started making their own movies because it's so satisfying watching the film adaptations now.
*Still not over what 20th c Fox did to the Dark Phoenix Saga*

I just watched Predestination. Not quite the usual time travel movie, yet also pretty much the usual time travel movie. Really liked it.

Thanks to Kypriotha I was finally convinced to watch Studio Ghibli's From Up on Poppy Hill and I'm so very glad that I did. ^_^ Hee hee, my evil plan was a success I am seeing Into The Woods at the open air cinema on Sunday, which I am very excited about

I had a moment of "arooo?" because our windchill is supposed to bring it down to -20(F) tomorrow. Forgot that whole hemisphere-seasons thing.
Hope you like Into the Woods, though! I really enjoyed it, but I don't know if it's because I know the stage version so well that I was able to fill in any plot holes. ^_^;;

Lisa I'm pretty sure that would have helped! Into the Woods has never come to Australia so I really knew nothing about it going in. The first half was totally fine, made perfect sense, but the second half... I felt like I lost most of the witch's character and motivation. I have no idea why she did what she did! As I said earlier, there were some gaping plot holes where things were cut.

Just quietly, if anyone ever has the choice between seeing Into The Woods at a normal cinema or an open air cinema, *always* go for the open air cinema option! The added ambiance for the film was great! Trees all around the perimeter, the sun setting, bats and fireflies flying over head. Fantastic! The film was pretty good too I thought all the characters were really well done. I did get a bit lost in the second act - particuarly the last song by the witch and the way some story lines just seemed to...end, when I thought there maybe should have been a little bit more? I don't know if seeing the stage show would have helped there or whether it's like that in that version too. A friend told me there is a recording of the stage show (possibly also done at an open air venue) which I'd like to see at some stage as a comparison.

Kypriotha did your friend happen to mention where to get said recording? I really need to find a website with some more obscure titles to its name. I've been hunting an Australian/Canadian show from the early 2000's called Guinevere Jones for years now and no one has it. The only copy I've found has been dubbed into Russian!

Knowing the stage show for character motivation would have helped a lot. For example, Rapunzel gets killed by the giantess - hence the witch's willingness to hand over Jack as appeasement (and revenge). I agree that the first half was better than the second, though.

Wait Rapunzel died!? I think I might have been happier ignorant there. I recently watched the Hundred Foot Journey, really lovely movie, especially if you like food.

I saw Kingsman and it was awesome. Great action scenes, directing, music, etc. and it's the kind of movie that succeeds because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Also watched Jupiter Ascending, which was everything I'd expected it to be. Eddie Redmayne totally went for it, haha.

I just attempted to watch Seventh Son. And when I say attempted I mean that it was so terrible that I couldn't get even half way through it.
And the worst part is, I really wanted to like it. A good medieval fantasy epic is so hard to come by and those are my favourite types of movies, but unfortunately this one was so ridiculously dramatic and OTT that it was way too hard to take seriously, even with it's good cast.

I saw Cinderella the other night. It wasn't my choice, but my friend had free tickets. It was...better than I expected, but still no where near as good as Ever After. I felt they could have done more to make it different. The storyline of the prince and his father was good, but I felt could have been given a bit more time. And I would really have liked Ella and the prince to have met more than once before the ball. But most of all, if Ella is going to make a thing about wearing her mother's (pink) dress, then I think it would have been nice for the final dress to bear some resemblance to that (pink) dress! Sorry, that seems to have become my particular bug bear!

I somewhat disagree and preferred the first Pitch Perfect, but there were still a million memorable moments and I think I will like it more on rewatch.
I've also recently watched A Testament of Youth. I thought the movie was pretty beautiful and excellent, but I cried the whole way through. I will probably not rewatch it =P

It took me two attempts to see Pitch Perfect 2 (the first time the movie broke). I definitely prefer the first one, but there were things I liked about the sequel. I will probably watch it again, but not as obsessively as the first.
I am seeing the last Studio Ghibli film (When Marnie Was There) tomorrow, which I am both very excited and very sad about.
