I've seen quite a few movies since I've been in Germany. I saw Cloud Atlas at an open air cinema - and I basically had no idea what was going on, something which wasn't helped by the fact it was in German with no subtitles and used much more complex language than the last German film I saw (Fünf Freunde - Famous Five)...
At the English-language cinema I've seen Monsters University (also saw that before I left home), Despicable Me 2 and the first Mortal Instruments movie, City of Bones. I'm not as big a fan of the book as the friend I saw it with is (though I do like the original trilogy), but I LOVED the film.
On the plane on the way over here I also finally saw Silver Linings Playbook! I can definitely see why Jennifer Lawrence (whom I love) won so many awards for it.

Eh, I wasn't very impressed with that movie, to be honest. I've seen a couple movies recently: Pain and Gain (which was kind of awkward to watch with my dad, but I thought it was funny), Now You See Me (good, but had a wussy ending), Red 2 (good), and White House Down (good).

The last movie I saw at the cinema was Pacific Rim. It was lots of fun, even if parts of the plot had me rolling my eyes. Spoiler A portal to another dimension at the bottom of the ocean? Come on. Not new movie wise, I recently watched Lord of the Rings for the I-don't-even-know-how-many-th time, to celebrate my birthday last month.

I saw Riddick, which was good (and funny!), but predictable. My parents and I were more interested in the family in front of use who brought a young kid to see it...I don't think he was even ten, and his mum kept covering his eyes when nudity or gore came on-screen...

Haven't seen many new movies lately. Actually, haven't watched many movies period lately. Saw the latest Hobbit movie on Boxing Day, watched Love Actually at this year's Christmas party and watched The Castle as a bit of light relief.
Oops, forgot I saw Ender's Game recently. It was an okay movie, though to justify seeing it I chose to donate some money to GLAAD.

Oh yes... THE HOBBIT! I went on a girly movie spree. Sixteen Candles, Love Actually, The Holiday, The Devil Wears Prada. Also rewatched the first Hobbit movie. Pretty sure I prefer the second one.
Did anyone see Frozen? SOO GOOOD. I am properly obsessed with Kristoff. I sort of think part of the ending didn't flow well with the rest of it but I'll try not to spoil it for anyone. Great take on the true love thing, though.
Also, I saw American Hustle but I expected a lot more from it. It was good, but too long and a rather stressful experience. I would go see it once, but not twice. Also, even though it was well made, I don't think it really deserves any Oscars. But my only personal advocations in terms of Oscars are Michael Fassbender for Twelve Years A Slave as supporting actor, Michael B. Jordan for Fruitvale Station as leading actor and Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine as leading actress. Honestly, I think it's been a great year for movies.

Elvensmith I am totally in love with Frozen! It's officially become my favourite Disney movie. I have never been able to pick my favourite before now, but this is definitely it! I think it has something to do with Elsa, Idina Menzel and Kristin Bell. I was kind if in love with Hans for a good portion for the movie. I love Kristoff too but I struggle to take the character seriously when I think too hard about the fact that he's voiced by the wonderful, but very gay Jonathan Groff. Don't get me wrong, I think he did a great job, but I found it hard to take this very 'masculine' character seriously when I know how very uninterested in women Groff is. Basically though, Frozen makes Tangled look really, really bad. And I love Tangled.

I didn't realize that he was being voiced by Jonathan Groff while I was watching it mageprincess so it was probably easier to take him seriously. And I'm not sure that I agree that it made Tangled look bad. It had a much more involving storyline with a more intriguing world, but I think that the plot of Tangled was much smoother and consistent. The characters and motivations in Frozen wavered and sometimes didn't make a lot of sense to me, but I would love to know more and revisit that world. I also have recently been on a Stanley Kubrik binge. I watched the Shining for the first time a few days ago and just watching Barry Lyndon last night which was a GREAT 9if looooonnnnggg movie. Very involving. I really admire Kubrik's photographic sensibility. Every scene is like a painting into which the characters wander in and out. And he TAKES HIS TIME. My least favorite thing about recent Hollywood movies is their need to rush things and fill up silence. That's one thing I always loved about japanese animated films-- they're never afraid of silence.

I saw Frozen too! It was really good. I liked it. I've had the songs stuck in my head for the last few days

Kypriotha, I think the songs are the main reason I love Frozen so much! Let It Go has got to be one of the best songs that's ever come out of Disney. No movies for me recently, but I've started watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I really like it so far, definitely worth going out and getting it on DVD.

mageprincess I'm seriously thinking I'll have to buy the soundtrack! And I LOVE Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries! I really need to catch up on Season Two; I missed most of it because I was overseas, but I think at least part 1 is out on DVD now.

Kypriotha all of it is on DVD! I was looking at it today but couldn't justify $28.99 with my current budget

Just watched Mad Bastards on the ABC. It's sort of drama-ish/slice-of-life, but it also deals with a lot of domestic violence, etc (in an emotional way). It's serious in that sense, but I really enjoyed it, especially the music.

I just watched Frozen too! I though Hans's character wavered too much, but I did enjoy it. Particularly the songs. I seem to be the only one, but I preferred Elsa and her look before "Let it go".
I also watched Brave recently, and I thought it was great. The mother-daughter relationship was so sweet!

I saw Frozen a little while ago, and it was cute and adorable and had some great songs and Olaf was adorable, and the ending was adorable, but... {Early plot point spoiler}I can't get over the start of the story! The trolls gave terrible advice! And the King and Queen took it without thinking! Because, of course, Elsa will learn power over her magic by staunchly avoiding using it, and people will learn to accept her power when it escapes the control she hasn't learned because she doesn't know how to use it. And yeah, let's not let Anna remember Elsa's magic, and let's separate the sisters for the rest of their childhood, because Anna hasn't spent the last five years of her life being perfectly comfortable with Elsa's magic. I can't suspend disbelief or just accept that this was reasonable. </endrant>

I saw Robocop and really enjoyed it. At first, it was a bit odd, but it got better. Granted, I have basically no recollection of what the original was like, so I can't really say if it was a good remake or not. On its own, though, it's worth the watch.

I saw The Wind Rises, the last Studio Ghibli film by Hayao Miyazaki, on Friday and really loved it (although I thought the time jumps could have been a little clearer!). The film is a fictionalised biography of the designer of the Mitsubishi Zero fighter pilot (I believe the parts about the planes are fairly historically accurate - it's mainly his personal life that has been fictionalised/invented). (Who would have thought it - Miyazaki making his last film about planes... )

Finally watched Catching Fire. So much crying. I enjoyed it up until a certain point (the end, basically) because then stuff happened off-screen and it seemed weird that Katniss didn't have as much agency, I guess?

I enjoyed it up until a certain point (the end, basically) because then stuff happened off-screen and it seemed weird that Katniss didn't have as much agency, I guess? I find agency an interesting idea to reflect upon in THG, because a major point of the story is that Katniss is *literally* a pawn in someone's game (namely, the Capitol's pawn in the Hunger Games). So how much agency does she really have? How does one even define agency in a world that is as controlling as Panem? Spoiler for the end of Catching Fire And is it really surprising that she would suddenly turn out to be a pawn in someone else's game? I watched The Princess Bride recently because our Italian exchange student wasn't sure if she'd seen it and I thought it was a film everyone should see once in their life

Kypriotha You make some excellent points about Catching Fire - I was actually questioning my reaction because of some of that. I still felt a kind of disconnect at that point of the movie, though. :S And not a movie, but I'm currently watching the final season of Castle.

I watched the Hunger Games movie yesterday; I thought it was pretty good, and now I'm looking forward to watching Catching Fire.
Any recommendations on a favourite Studio Ghibli movie? I've seen Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle, but now I don't know where to go next. Maybe My Neighbour Totoro.

housewife My favourite is Porco Rosso! You should definitely try it. I recently saw Thor 2, which was okay. Some amusing parts, some fangirly parts, but overall I prefer the Iron Man, Captain America, and Avengers movies to Thor.

housewife, Kiki's Delivery Service and Laputa: Castle in the Sky, are both a definite must! Also definitely get your hands on Arrietty. There is both an English and American version of that dubbed. In Australia the English one was in theatres, but I own both on DVD and the American one actually a better dub. And seriously, if you don't find yourself a copy of Ponyo you are missing out!

It took me a whole evening to get through it, since I kept pausing it to stop and go take care of other things. I was also way behind on the bandwagon on seeing Frozen- finally got around to it about 3 weeks ago. I certainly liked it, but didn't love love it as much as I thought I would since I'd been listening to the soundtrack for months and thought it was great.

I finally watched Divergent, and I thought it was pretty good, although I think they downplayed Caleb's transfer a little too much. I thought it was a decent representation of the book A while ago I watched the Vampire Academy movie, which was also pretty good, aside from the animal mutilation. A Vampire girl puts a kitty in her backpack to take to her Vampire school? We all know this isn't going to end well for kitty.

I actually really liked it though. So much girl power.
