Title: Loyal Subjects
Rating: G
Summary: Jon unburdens himself to his most loyal subjects.
Note: I’ve decided it’s about time I started writing again, so here we go!
The three men sat in the parlour; Raoul nursing a glass of brandy and Gary surreptitiously flicking through papers as they half-listened to the King’s complaints.
“She’s never here!” Jon grumbled, slumped in his chair. “You don’t see me running around with the King’s Own everyday!”
“Maybe you should, Jon,” Gary suggested. “It could be a good way to get to know the men, show them what their fighting for – Ow!”
“Stop encouraging him,” Raoul growled, raising his fist for a second strike.
Gary held up his hands in surrender as Raoul turned back to his newly married King.
“Jon, if my men are busy bowing and scraping they can’t do their jobs. I need them focussed and ready to fight.”
Jon sat upright and glowered at the bigger man. “I wouldn’t expect them to bow or scrape! I’d fight alongside them! Need I remind you that in the Tusaine War I-“
“Yes, Jon, you saw just as much of the battle as anyone. You led the rescue mission to save Alanna. You’re a war hero.” Raoul patted Jon on the shoulder as he got to his feet. “We know.”
Raoul placed his empty glass on the table and sauntered from the room, as Jon glared in his wake. “When did Raoul turn into such a pretentious git?” he asked his Acting Prime Minister.
“Probably around the time you handed him command of the realms most elite fighting force,” Gary replied with a shrug. “You should be proud. He sounds more like you every day.”
