Title: Shaky Ground
Rating: G
Prompt: #29, Dominion
Summary: Thayet and Jonathan talk in the wake of the Coronation. Thanks to Kat and Lisa for betaing!
"How did you know the world wouldn't come apart?" Thayet asks wonderingly. She notices she is gripping the arms of her chair like the ground still shakes beneath her, and tells her hands to relax. It doesn't work.
"I didn't," Jonathan answers, just like she felt he would. He looks so tired, and if she had use of her hands, she'd reach out to touch him, let him know that he doesn't have to shoulder that burden alone.
But they are too new to one another, and she stays put. It is enough of a ground-trembler that she is in here on her own with the new king. Buri would never allow it, if she knew.
"How does it feel?" she asks next. "Being responsible for the lives of so many?"
He tilts his head, looking at her, and her stomach drops in a way that has nothing to do with the earth. "Do you always ask so many questions?"
She flushes, but replies, "I consider it the best way to find out what I want to know."
This draws a smile from him. "I have always found the best way is to experience it for yourself. You are on the right path, after all."
Thayet frowns at him, and this is all too far, she is about to say. Yes, she finds him attractive, but she doesn't want this life.
"Teachers are responsible for lives too," Jonathan adds, and her words die on her tongue.
"Minds more than lives, your Majesty," she says, getting unsteadily to her feet. It is the aftermath of the earthquakes, and nothing more - but it is definitely time for her to leave, all the same. "I had better stop taking up your valuable time. Buri will be wondering where I am."
"I wouldn't want you to keep her waiting," he replies, and maybe he knows that Thayet doesn't know where her friend is. Maybe his friends have lured the K'mir off with promises of new bows and sturdy horses.
She shakes her head and leaves anyway. She doesn't quite have the hang of Tortall yet, and until she does, it isn't a good idea for her to be alone with the king.
