Title: Friendship
Rating: PG
Word Count: 489
Card: Summer
Bingo: Sweat + Discussions + Relax + Cotton + Lemonade
Summary: Dema might be attracted to Keth, but he would not risk their friendship for all the gold in Tharios.
A/N: Can be seen as a prequel to Dehydration, but it can also stand alone.
The heat given off by Keth’s kiln was overwhelming. It hit Dema like a physical wall when he walked through the protective circle Keth had put up to capture any of the stray magic he might let slip. Keth had not noticed Dema’s entrance, too deeply engrossed in his work to notice anything short of an outright explosion, and maybe not even that. Given that his errand was not – for once – urgent, Dema took the opportunity to relax for a moment and watch Keth work. It truly was fascinating, to see the elegance in his movements, grace granted with the ease of long practice. Keth was stripped to the waist, having cast off his shirt because of, Dema assumed, the very same heat that had had Dema himself sweating - even in his cool, cotton kyten - within moments of entering the room. Another, smaller, part of his brain was appreciating exactly how good the other mage looked, half naked and sweaty and completely in his element. Dema quashed this train of thought mercilessly – as the younger son of a First Class family, he was not required to marry or produce offspring, although it was at least somewhat expected, but Keth had an arranged marriage in Namorn. It would be dishonorable to get involved with him, even if Keth tended in that direction. Dema shook his head to clear it and looked back up to see that Keth had finished his piece while he was distracted and was now looking at the detective mage in concern.
“Are you all right? You look a little odd. Is it a new case?” Dema found Keth’s concern endearing if somewhat frustrating.
“I’m fine, just a bit tired. I had to stay at the station until the globe cleared. Actually, that’s what I came here to tell you about; we wrapped up the Jester case – your globe led us right to the man, and we got there in time to save his latest victim,” Dema said truthfully. It is not a lie if you just do not tell the whole truth. Still, he felt uneasy. Keth had become one of his closest friends in the past few years and Dema’s pride shied at the near falsehood.
Keth grinned at the mention of the captured killer, every inch the proud mage and craftsman, and it widened even further when Dema told him how key his work had been. The discussion continued, Keth wanting to know exactly how magic had been used in the incarceration of the criminal who had used the moniker ‘Jester’.
After Dema had satisfied Keth’s considerable curiosity, Keth wiped his forehead and pulled down his shields with a quick wave of his hand, admonishing himself for his rudeness and invited Dema in for a cool glass of lemonade. As he accepted gratefully, Dema thought that even without the added complication of Keth’s betrothal, he would not have risked this friendship for the world.
