Title: Aught Else Rating: PG Word Count: 108 Pairing: Jon/Zahir – Team Bend-a-lot Round/Fight: 1/A Summary: What is Jon, without his kingship? Author's Note: Throughout SMACKDOWN, I'll be posting pieces inspired by quotes and speeches from Shakespeare, because I'm a huge fangirl. They will be for no particular pairing, just whoever seems to fit (though they may be disproportionately J/Z). This series is based on a soliloquy from Henry V, for reasons which should become abundantly clear.
~~~~~~
Art thou aught else but place, degree and form, Creating awe and fear in other men?
“Zahir, I have a question.”
“Hm?”
“And I want an honest answer.”
“Of course.”
“Good. Well . . . if you took away all the trappings—crown, robes, throne, servants, jewels, everything—what would I be left with? What would I be?”
The Bazhir youth glanced up, startled. His ruler, usually so domineering, looked oddly small and lost, staring out the window into the middle distance. Zahir stood, made his way across the room, and wrapped his arms around his knight-master, resting his chin on the king's shoulder.
“You'd be Jon,” he murmured. “And I, for one, would be perfectly fine with that.”
I like the idea behind this, actually. That the king is a construct, born out of necessity and he isn't quite who Jon is. And I like the almost lonely way Jon asks it. It's somewhat desperate and painful. And Zahir gave him a hug!
