Title: Hard Condition Rating: G Word Count: 127 Pairing: Jon/Zahir – Team Bend-a-lot Round/Fight: 1/A Summary: The king is unique. Zahir knows this. Jon sometimes forgets. Author's Note: Throughout SMACKDOWN, I'll be posting pieces inspired by quotes and speeches from Shakespeare, because I'm a huge fangirl. They will be for no particular pairing, just whoever seems to fit (though they may be disproportionately J/Z). This series is based on a soliloquy from Henry V, for reasons which should become abundantly clear.
~~~~~~
We must bear all. O hard condition, Twin-born with greatness, subject to the breath Of every fool, whose sense no more can feel But his own wringing!
“Jon, my Lord of Naxen asked that I bring these to you.” Zahir proffered a stack of papers, nearly black with Gary's illegible scrawl. “They are the summaries of petitions you should look at.”
“Of course.” The king took them wearily, the worry lines etched around his eyes and mouth growing deeper. “I don't suppose I should complain. This is probably a tenth of what he had to go through.”
His squire shrugged noncommittally. “But he's not the king.”
The word hung in the air, its implications reverberating around the still room. Monarch, ruler, national symbol, head of state, diplomat, general, mediator, policy-maker, sorcerer, wielder of the Dominion Jewel, representative, figurehead. No, Gary was not the king.
“Thank you,” Jon murmured.
I love the list of everything the King must be, what he represents to everyone. It both gives him leave to relax - because he's the king - and impetus to do more - because he's the king.
I love the way you subtly describe the burdens of kingship on Jon, and the way Zahir understands.
