Summary: Clary sometimes wonders if it was worth ending what they had. A series loosely based on "Stand By" By Senit.
Why did things have to be so damned complicated? She had her Tom, he had Sabine, and yet they still seemed to feel this pull. She did not want to be with Mattes anymore. It had been a bad idea from start to finish, and yet she still could only remember their time together fondly.
It had been whirl wind, not more than a month, and yet it had seemed so real at the time. As though she would never lose his comfortable weight in the bed next to her. One night he had not come, and the next when he did she yelled and from there it was…done.
There were sometimes, when she caught his eyes or he grabbed her hand and they both felt a spark that she would be back to then, when it didn’t matter if the kennel started to mumble because they wouldn’t even hear. Sometimes, when she fought with Tom or had a hard night, she would look at him and think of only the good times. She would stop the present and step back.
And every once and a while, they would meet, and lock their doors and just pretend, for one night, that they hadn’t moved on. That they could still be young and silly and happy. But eventually, reality would sneak back in with the sun through the shutters and they would separate and move on.
It was a cycle that they would never escape, but neither of them really wanted to.
