Title: Leaving the Nest
Rating: G
Prompt: #20 Faith
Summary: Gary has trouble seeing his last child leave home.
Gary of Naxen looked at his little girl as she finished checking her saddlebags. Except, she wasn't his little girl any more.
"Alright, Da. I think I'm ready," said Jaquetta, turning and wiping her dusty hands on her riding dress. She looked exactly the same as she had when she was four, with a wide smile, sharp dark eyebrows curved over dancing brown eyes, and a bundle of light brown hair that was always trying to escape from its bun.
He stepped forward to embrace her, not trusting himself to speak. She would ride - alone, except for her grey mare Ruby - to Port Legann, where she would enter the convent there as a Daughter of the Goddess. She would only change into her white robes, the robes that marked her as one of the Mother's servants, when she reached the city, for fear of getting them dusty during the trip.
Jaquetta pulled away, and Gary felt his heart waver. She was only a girl, barely seventeen years of age. Although she had a strong heart and a determination that she must have inherited from her mother, Gary wasn't sure how he would bear the separation.
He watched as she swung her leg over Ruby, settling herself with ease. She looked down the road with a clear eye, no doubt seeing Port Legann and the new life that awaited her there.
"Jaquetta," Gary said, moving forward to grab Ruby's reins. "Please be careful. You don't know what kind of people could be on the road, or in the city - "
His youngest daughter smiled down at him comfortingly. "I'll be fine. Besides, it's them who should be looking out for me." Still smiling, she blew him a kiss and kicked Ruby into a gallop, leaving her father behind in a cloud of dust.
