Summary: Thayet has no family, so it falls to Buri to consent to Jonathan's proposal.
Jonathan shifts uneasily by the fire when Buri walks into Myles's study, and his face shows the slightest hint of relief as she sits down, relaxing into the thick and comfortable chair.
"Well?" She asks, linking her fingers together and resting her elbows on the table, looking appraisingly up at him. He sighs.
"I was pre-warned of what you wanted to discuss with me, sire. Alanna seemed to think it the wisest option. "
"Of course she would. Thankyou for coming. Seeing me." He says, slowly. Buri fiddles with her hands, inspecting her nails, and he runs a hand through his hair before sitting down, bracing his hands on his knees.
"I want to ask your permission to marry Thayet. You're the only family she has, and I would like to know that I have your blessing before I ask Thayet." He looks down, and Buri stares coolly back at him.
"Why?"
"I beg your pardon?" Jonathan's eyebrows rise quizzically.
"Why do you wish to marry her? And why do you want my blessing? The King of Tortall does not need the dispossessed commoner from a warring tribe halfway across the world's blessing to marry a Princess." Buri's voice is cold, neutral, and Jonathan looks firmly across at her.
"I love her. I love her enthusiasm. Her compassion. Her pride. Her courage, her bravery, her empathy. Her ability to speak her mind whilst still being mindful of whom she speaks to. Her dreams of equality. Her passion for all people, no matter their birth or their blood. Her honesty and her ability to take things in her stride. Her determination." Jonathan pauses, a quick smile flashing dreamily across his face. "As for your blessing? I do not think she would even consider marrying me without it. You are the most important person in her world, and as Thayet is important to me, that means that you are also important to me. Thayet sees herself as a dispossessed commoner as well, and I believe that you are both far more then that. And I think it would be a good idea for me to stay on your good side for the future. You helped save my life, and the lives of everyone I care about. That means a lot to me, that you would be so willing to do so for many people you barely knew. You have made it quite clear, Buriram Tourakom, that you are someone well worthy of my respect. I'm giving it to you."
Jonathan looked earnest, and she looked away. She knew that Thayet cared deeply for this new King, knew that Thayet was very almost in love with him, with his plans for Tortall, shared the same hope and dream tinged with optimism that for all her realism Buri couldn't stomp on. She couldn’t ignore that this would change everything she had known and clung to. Thayet would be the Queen she deserved to be, with a Court of people who loved her, not the Princess who was the pawn and loved by only few. Thayet would be Jonathan's wife before she was Buri's closest friend, but both Thayet and Jonathan would have to put up a fight before she resigned as Thayet's bodyguard. She blinks, and reminds herself that Thayet was not the type to shun her because he was married. But for so long, Thayet was all she had, and she was all that Thayet had, and now Thayet would have someone else, and Buri would still only have Thayet. She stares at the fire, reminding herself that she wasn't as alone as she felt anymore. She was staying in Myles's house, and he was kind and friendly and like a father, and Alanna and George and Coram wouldn't abandon her, and she'd made friends with Rispah and Gary and Cythera and Eleni and Raoul. Her bond with Thayet was far too strong to be broken just by her marriage. She sighs. All she wanted was for Thayet to be happy, and Jonathan would do that.
"If you ever lay a hand on her, or hurt her in any way, we won't be having a conversation."She says, meeting his bright eyes in a dark glare.
He nods slightly. "Understood."
"Then you have my blessing. You will make her happy. You'll be good for her." She smiles slightly, and is surprised to find herself crushed against his chest.
"Thankyou, Buri." He murmurs softly, and she pulls away uncomfortably, giving a small half-smile and a small bow as she walks away.
It will be for the best. She thinks, and a full smile brightens her face at the thought of Thayet's excitement, slipping as she realises the fervour of silk and dresses she will no doubt be swept up in.
