Title:Blessings [1]
Rating:PG
Word Count: 370 words
Pairing: Team Girl Power
Round/Fight: 1/B
Summary: Thayet prys for gossip confirmation, but Buri keeps her secrets.
"Do you have anything to tell me?" Thayet asks, leaning against Buri's office desk with a wicked grin on her face when Buri walks into the room.
"Larse got himself into hijinks last night and needed to be rescued this morning. I won't specify details, but he's landed himself and his squad Progress duty. He won't do it again if he has to sit through Progress duty."
"Whereas you'll be escaping to scout duty."
"Yes. Askew would run askew if they needed to shine their saddles or sharpen their weapons anymore, so in the interests of not dealing with a bunch of stir-crazy Riders, I've decided to take them off your hands."
"With no ulterior motive.”
Buri raises an eyebrow, and Thayet sits on the desk, looking calmly back at her.
"None." She says, and Thayet sighs, hopping off the desk and walking around to sit in Buri's chair. She rests her cheek on her hand and looks at Buri, and Buri looks back, her face neutral. Thayet glances at the papers scattered across Buri’s desk, the words Third Company staring brazenly back at her in Raoul’s heavy scrawl on the first piece of parchment, and Thayet’s Dogs crossed out and amended with Askew in Buri’s firm script.
"How did we end up like this?" Thayet murmurs, quietly, and Buri sighs quietly.
"I don't know."
Buri remains standing and Thayet remains sitting, both lost in thought, in memories. They had been so close for so long - as close as you could be, they had thought, and all they had had was the other. Running into Alanna had brought them through a whirlwind to end up as Queen of Tortall and the Commander of the Queen's Riders, but there was something, deep down, that still longed for that closeness. For the friend who would never judge, for the ease of knowledge shared, of secrets and crushes and unrequited love, for the destruction of the barrier that had appeared from nowhere to stand in between them.
Thayet stands and walks towards her, enveloping her in a warm embrace, resting her head on Buri's shoulder.
"I am so happy for you." Thayet whispers. "But you don’t seem to want me to be."
