Title: Out There and Alone Rating: PG Word count: 167 Pairing: Clary/Mattes Round/Fight: 4/A Summary: AU: Clary’s rogue years; arguing with Tom brings out a rebellious streak and she runs off to Port Caynn to get away from it all. Mattes follows, to stand between her and the darkness. Is there any way to recover from this? He doesn’t want her out there and alone now. (lyrics from Dance Floor Anthem—I Don’t Want To Be In Love By Good Charlotte.)
Mattes recognizes someone walking towards the Jane Street Kennel when he steps out into the early morning.
It’s Tomlan Goodwin.
Mattes can’t stop himself from thanking all the Gods he can remember at the moment that Clary has already left the Kennel, but Tom doesn’t know that.
“Go home.”
Clary won’t forgive him if she thinks he’s messing with something that’s none of his business, but Tom’s come to the Kennel, and that’s Mattes’ place.
“I’m here for Clary,” Tom replies evenly, hands in pockets.
Mattes pities the man. “She’s already left. Don’t wait for her.”
He doesn’t want another argument here, doesn’t really want another argument between them at all. A distracted Dog is a dead Dog.
“It isn’t any of your business.”
“It is if it comes on duty with her. She’ll go home when she’s ready.” Mattes crosses his arms, and Tom doesn’t argue with him.
Both of them hope that Clary will return soon; neither of them mention it before they part ways.
