Title: Here If You Need Me
Rating: PG
Word count: 233
Pairing: Clary/Mattes
Round/Fight: 4/A
Summary: AU: Clary’s rogue years; arguing with Tom brings out a rebellious streak and she runs off to Port Caynn to get away from it all. Mattes follows, to stand between her and the darkness. Is there any way to recover from this?
We break up, it’s something that we do now. (lyrics from Dance Floor Anthem—I Don’t Want To Be In Love By Good Charlotte.)
The shelves and cubbies in the back rooms of the Jane Street Kennel are worn and familiar, and the whole building feels like home again, Mattes thinks as he listens to the sounds of Clary rummaging in her belongings and stowing them away to await their first shift back on the Watch.
They’ve escaped from the salty sea brine smells of Port Caynn at long last, and left the docks and their dirty dealings behind, and though the smells of the Lower City are no mot’s bundle of flowers, Mattes couldn’t be happier to be back, with Clary.
Voices in the front rooms are raised, and Clary’s head comes up at one in particular, one familiar voice amongst those belonging to the Dogs on duty.
“Tom’s here,” she murmurs, and Mattes moves closer to her unthinkingly.
“Mattes—“ Clary looks up at him, brown eyes uncertain. “I—I don’t know wha—“
There is no questions in Mattes’ thoughts, and he leans down and kisses her gently. “Go talk to him. I’m here if you need me.”
She squares her shoulders, and he hears her footsteps disappear down the hall, taking the raised voices with her.
Mattes is proud of her, talking to Tom after the quarrels that had driven her to Port Caynn in the first place, but if he finds her hurting again…
Mattes doesn’t allow himself to finish the thought.
