There’s something up with Mattes; of that, I am fairly certain. It’s in the way he glances haltingly at me before looking away, the way he shifts his feet, the way his smile is a little less bright than usual, and the way he looks slightly…
I think about what I would call such signs in a Rat. Nervous. Up to no good.
I have enough of it by the time we’ve walked two streets. “What is it, Mattes?” I must have snapped it far more irritably than I meant to, because he fairly jumped.
“Nothing. I mean…I have a problem,” he admitted, lowering his voice and glancing around us.
I think of all sorts of problems that Dogs might have, and then the less pleasant ones. I’m not sure which this one is, because I don’t know how well I can claim to know Mattes. I wait for him to explain.
“This husband. He…caught me with his wife. He wants a duel.”
“Mattes, I sarden told you Elise was trouble – “
“Will you be my second?” he blurts out.
I am tempted to say no, but then I think of the paperwork I’d have to file, and how Ahuda would probably give me a looby for my next partner.
“Fine,” I snap. “But the next time you sarden lie with a married woman, Mattes, you deal with her husband yourself.”
We are at least halfway down the street before I add, “And if you get yourself killed, Mother save you, Mattes, because…because if Ahuda makes me file the paperwork, I will find you in the Peaceful Realms and make you deal with it.”
He gulps. I smile.
