Title: Arranged Marriage
Rating: PG
Word Count: 412
Pairing: Kalasin/Wyldon
Fight: 1/C
Summary: Kalasin wants to know what an arranged marriage is like. A series where Wyldon and Kalasin struggle with the idea of duty.
“Sir?” Kalasin asks on one of their morning rides. It’s winter, so she’s bundled up in blue coats and fur, her bright eyes and pink cheeks just peeking out of her hood. “You had an arranged marriage, right?”
“Yes, Kalasin,” Wyldon says, reigning his gelding so it falls in step beside her mare. “Vivienne was a Tusaine war-bride. We married to help end the war.”
“Were you in love with her, sir?” Kalasin asks, tentatively.
Wyldon sees the root of the problem immediately. “Who are their majesties in negotiation with?”
“Carthak, Maren, Galla, and Tyra, sir,” Kalasin reels off, names learned by heart. “I just sort of want to know what an arranged marriage was like, you see.”
“I first met Vivienne on our wedding day,” Wyldon begins. “It was a bit strange, seeing someone that you know you’ll spend the rest of your life with. I didn’t love her, not at first. I thought she was pretty, and a bit shy.”
“Did you like her at first, sir? What was it like?”
“I didn’t dislike her, but I didn’t like her either. I didn’t know her.”
“But I thought you loved her, sir. That’s what the court says,” Kalasin protested.
“I do,” Wyldon commented, his eyes sharp. “We went riding together- she could ride brilliantly, you know, and she liked the dogs I breed. So my caution turned into admiration, and my admiration turned into a deep rooted respect. And as I got to know her, and she helped me breed dogs, and told me stories of Tusaine, and we went riding together every evening, it turned into a friendship. And friendship turned into love.”
“Do you think I have a chance for that, sir?” Kalasin asks.
“Very few people have what your parents have- love at first sight, or a marriage that was based on love.” Wyldon looked the young eleven year old princess over carefully as they come near to the stables again. “But that doesn’t mean you can’t be happy, Kalasin. You can have a marriage based on friendship and respect, and still be very happy. Do you understand?”
Kalasin nods solemnly. “Yes, sir.”
When they’re finished brushing and grooming their mounts, Kalasin has to go off for her lessons, and Wyldon has to train the pages. Impulsively, Kalasin reaches over and gives him a quick hug. “Thanks, sir,” she says, before running off to the palace.
Wyldon watches her go, a small smile tugging at his lips.
