Title: Offer Rating: PG Word Count: 215 Pairing: Kalasin/Wyldon Fight: 1/C Summary: Kalasin has accepted a marriage offer. A series where Wyldon and Kalasin struggle with the idea of duty.
“I’ve accepted a marriage offer, sir,” Kalasin tells him one evening during their chess game, looking down at her silk clad lap.
“Who?” Wyldon demands, his voice sharp. It almost feels like losing one of his daughters, but this time not to another fief, but to another country.
“Carthak,” she says quietly. Then she looks up, speaking with a sense of purpose. “They offered Tortall exclusive rights to the silk trade, sir. And their Emperor has promised and signed off that I will be his co-ruler, not just his consort.”
Wyldon whistles softly. “Is that why you chose him?”
“In part, sir. The terms of the marriage contract were the most agreeable, and I didn’t give up my dreams to become an ornament.” Her face brightens. “I’ve already started working on some proposed bills I’d like to introduce, sir. Anti slavery abuse laws, a bill that will allow marriage between two men or two women, and Kaddar wrote a letter saying he would like my input on the opening of some charity hospitals.”
Wyldon shakes his head. “When I was fourteen, fifteen- I just wanted to get a kiss from the pretty young noblewomen and save up for a Raven Armoury knife.”
Kalasin tilts her head to one side. “When I’m fifteen, I’ll be married.”

I bet Wyldon choked on that last line a little.

Wow. That last line is so powerful. I wonder if she even realizes it, the fact that (as Sketchy pointed out) Wyldon's recollection of being her age is so different?

Thanks, both of you! I think Kalasin, being so young, almost doesn't realize that every noblewoman isn't as self-sacrificing as she is, or as serious.
