She was pale. He didn’t know how anyone in Carthak could remain so, with this glaring sunlight. When he was finally introduced to her - more formally than he’d ever been in Tortall - he could see that she was thin, as well. No doubt a result of emotions. A person could lose a lot of weight in a week’s time.
“Lord Wyldon, it’s wonderful to see a familiar face from home,” she said, her voice thick, as if choking back tears. Her eyes were brighter than the sapphires at her throat. “How is Mother?”
“Bearing it with grace.”
“And my siblings?”
“Missing you more than ever,” he replied. “Your brother is beside himself.”
“When is the coronation?”
“July.” It would have been the twenty-fifth anniversary of King Jonathan’s reign. “Will your husband accompany you?”
The empress shook her head just once. “Binur is to represent him,” she said. “It seems harsh to turn around and leave immediately when you just arrived.”
“It’s completely understandable,” Wyldon reassured her. “We’re prepared to leave whenever you are, your Imperial Majesty.”
“Whatever happened to calling me Kally?”
“You know this is neither the time nor place,” he answered, his mouth twisting into a hint of a smile. “But when you’re back in your homeland, things will be different.”
“Yes,” she agreed sadly. “Everything will be different.”
