Title: The Land or the Lady Series: Opening Lines Rating: G Word Count: 221 Pairing: Maura/Kel Fight: 3/B Summary: Love is more important than societal aspirations. Based on the opening line from “The Great Gatsby”, by F. Scott Fitzgerald
In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. We were walking along a high ridge, overlooking most of the entirety of Dunlath, when he turned to me, his eyes fierce in his kind face.
“You’re too young to think about this yet, lass, but some day you will inherit this land. And when you’re of age, suitors will come bursting through your door in hopes of securing it for themselves. Aye, and maybe you as well, if you turn out half so pretty as your mother.”
It wasn’t meant to be an unkindness, suggesting that a person would be more interested in my land than my looks. And he had clasped my shoulder with an over-abundance of affection, pulled me closer to his side and said, “You be certain that the suitor you choose loves you for who you are, not for the land you sit upon. Even land such as this.”
His words accompanied me well into my twenties, as I waited for the person who would love me and not my opals. And when she rode up, her hazel eyes fierce as she looked at me, rather than the land beneath my feet, I knew that his advice had been put to good use.

It's so nice to feel like Maura's father was an influence over her life - I love the idea that she kept and treasured this moment, and relied on it later.
