Title: Embittered Rating: G Word Count: 227 Pairing: Kel/Maura Round/Fight: 3/B Summary: There are different kinds of betrayal, but one runs deeper than the other. “How did you feel, when you discovered your sister’s treason?” Maura fingered the stem of her wineglass, the corners of her mouth turning downward. “Imagine how you would feel,” she began slowly, her perfect enunciation the result of diction lessons in her youth. “Imagine how you might feel to learn that your father’s dying wishes, as well as all the ideas of duty and noblesse oblige that he’s instilled in you, had suddenly been betrayed. It wasn’t just her betrayal of Tortall so she could be queen. It was her bringing Dunlath into her mess. It was her showing the world that our father hadn’t properly instilled those beliefs that a Tortallan noble should hold above all else in the world.” Kel gulped, nervous at the hash tone in Lady Maura’s voice, at the hardness on her plain face. “You’ve betrayed command, I am told – thought it’s not spoken of in the general public,” Maura continued. “And I’m told that you accepted your fate on Traitor’s Hill, even though you did right by your people. “Well, my sister did wrong by hers. Dreadfully wrong, and we were barely able to stop her. My only feeling about her treachery is a hope that she is judged appropriately in the Black God’s realm, and that her time until then is spent understanding all the ways her actions were wrong.” QC: by Cassandra

I love the steel you bring out in Maura here. This is such a harsh piece, and it's so nice to place older Maura alongside Yolane, and see how she feels - because this is such a huge part of her life.
