Title: Openness Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 139 words Pairing: Kel/Maura Round/Fight: 3/B Summary: Kel asks questions Series: When They Were... Warning: Mention of sex
When Kel first asked about Alan, she and Maura were in bed together. It seemed Kel considered no setting inappropriate for her questions.
"What is Alan to you?" she enquired, twisting the covers in her hands.
Nothing. Everything. Maura trained her eyes on the creases appearing under Kel's fingers. "Playmate. Confidante."
"Lover?" Kel continued, in a would-be casual voice.
"Do you mind? If you do, I can-" Maura paused, and then blurted out, "Only, I hear things - about you and that King's Own sergeant. I don't mean to sound like I am accusing you of anything."
Kel's head flew up, and her cheeks were definitely flushed. "Dom. That's - oh, I don't know."
"I don't mind you exploring it," Maura said carefully. "If you do, though, I would like my freedom with Alan."
"I guess that's settled, then."

I love you. Oh, goodness, how I love you! Precious, awkward, painful, honest. So true, all of it.

Hee, thank you ;D I like the idea that Kel would feel comfortable enough in an intimate setting to voice her fears, but Maura is privately appalled.

I think your comment reminds me what I love about this pairing - Maura, even with all her mischievous cleverness - is ultimately a lady while Kel is not. She knows how to bring up any subject, rules of etiquette for a noblewoman, rather than a knight, etc., etc. Yet with all that difference, you don't feel them slipping into gender roles. They're always very clearly two women with different interests who happen to love each other and have different outlooks on life. It's so much fun, and this fic rather encapsulates why.

I'm glad I could remind you of why you were drawn to the pairing in the first place - I think sometimes in SMACKDOWN, it's all too easy to get caught up in competition, and it's rather nice to step back at the end and think, "Oh, that's why I did it". Thank you
