Title: Love Rating: PG Word Count: 214 Pairing: Gary/Raoul – Team Moustache Curtains Round/Fight: 2/C Summary: Gary is in love. So is Raoul.
Gary was in love. So was Raoul.
Gary laughed and twirled his love around the ballroom.
Raoul avoided court ladies and matchmakers, watching the dancers form the sidelines.
Gary snuck Cythera into his rooms and made love months before their wedding.
Raoul agreed to be their lookout, because he couldn’t say no to Gary. He pressed his ear to the door for one weak moment, then fled in fear, horror and loathing.
Gary composed poetry and slipped amorous notes into her laundered petticoats, for her to discover.
Raoul wrote laborious letters, trying to explain to Gary and to himself what he felt. He tore them up and threw them in the river lest someone find them.
Gary, when not with her, practised combat with his friends, who tried to distract him from his pining.
Raoul thrilled as Gary flipped him, burned at Gary’s grip, and shivered as Gary’s weight pressed down on him in victory. Then he staggered away and refused to fight again, knowing his body would humiliate him.
Gary smiled and joked, and spoke always of her.
Raoul became withdrawn and churlish, resentful of court life and longed for battle as a relief.
Gary ate and drank from love’s cornucopia.
Raoul drank, and continued to drink, because he couldn’t bear his love.

Gorgeous. The dichotomy of this, the equal balance between Raoul and Gary, the rhythm of it, is very well done, and the content is heartbreaking. This is very much as I've always imagined their relationship, and it explains so much about Raoul's persona in Squire. Really beautiful.
