Title: All Choked Up
Rating: PG
Word Count: 293
Pairing: Gary/Raoul – Team Moustache Curtains
Round/Fight: 2/C
Summary: What am I supposed to say when I’m all choked up but you’re okay? Thayet finds Cythera in the gardens, and suddenly the argument between Gary and Raoul is a lot bigger than just the two of them. Breakeven part 17, set post-Lioness Rampant.
Thayet doesn’t realize that Cythera is crying until she is only a few steps away from her friend, but at her question, Cythera can only shake her head and sob harder.
Thayet rocks the blonde woman in her arms, and sees a familiar scrawl across the parchment wadded up in Cythera’s hands. “Is this about Gary?” she asks gently, touching the paper, and Cythera nods as she swipes a hand across her eyes.
“But, I thought—you and he were…?” Thayet’s question is unspoken between them, and Cythera’s fingers clench the paper again.
“So did I,” she whispers softly, “but it’s not working, something’s wrong now, and he and Raoul are fighting…”
“They’re fighting?” This takes Thayet aback.
“They’re in some kind of argument, and it’s bad, Thayet, its really bad.” Cythera’s voice breaks, and more tears leak from the corners of her eyes. “Gary never has time to see me, anymore, and he always locks himself in his study—I heard them arguing a few days ago, and I haven’t even seen him since! And—“ she accepts the handkerchief that Thayet offers silently, “—and Raoul’s drinking again, and, and…” She buries her face in the fabric, crying again as she remembered the stench of alcohol pervading Raoul’s rooms when she had gone to ask if he was alright earlier.
“Shh…” Thayet smoothes Cythera’s hair, thinking over what she’s just heard. There had been rumors, she knew, about Raoul’s drinking, but nothing this bad, and nothing that looked like it was getting worse.
For Cythera’s sake, for Gary and Raoul’s sakes, Thayet promised herself that she’d mention this to Jon, if she could even just get his attention for a single moment, herself.
Gary wasn’t the only one drowning in work.
