Title: The Mindelan Girl (5)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 271
Pairing: Kel/Jon
Round/Fight: 2/A
Summary: Jon watches Kel in return.
After years on the throne of Tortall, Jon had seen a great deal. No, that was an understatement. He had reigned over three separate wars - the attempted usurping by Roger, the Immortals War, and the Scanran War - and surrounded himself with the oddest and diverse advisers and friends. No other monarch had a basilisk, a wild-mage and half-godborn, a black robe, the ex-King of thieves, and a woman as Champion.
And now he had added a Lady Knight who had the potential to be one of the best commanders in Tortall.
Keladry of Mindelan was an interesting person. After that night when she listened in silence to his depressed ramblings - Jon still flushed in embarrassment at the thought - he watched her from afar. Saw her interact with her peers, her superiors, but most telling of all, the servants.
Every commoner at court knew that the Mindelan girl was nice, for a noble, especially after the debacle at the end of her fourth year. But Jon watched her treat her young stray - picked up from the War - as a son or nephew, teasingly wiping his face and replacing his second and third sweets with healthier fare. He saw her thank men-at-arms, even help an over-burdened maid carry her things up flights of stairs. Jon looked into the maid that had been the subject of the trial held when she was a squire, and found out that she was the seamstress who had made many of Thayet’s newest dresses. Kel had given her gold to start her business.
Keladry of Mindelan treated commoners as equals. That was intriguing.
Jon watched her with growing fascination.
