Title: Power Rating: G Prompt: 46 Golden Years Summary: Jon grieves Roger. Notes: Part V of All The King's Men.
Later, when Jonathan is older, he goes to visit his cousin. The catacombs are empty, eerily silent, but Jon only feels coldness. His bones ache and his Gift is tired from months of rebuilding in the wake of his Coronation.
He had lost his cousin long before Roger’s betrayal came to light. Jon hadn’t realised until his mother died in his arms; didn’t understand until the world shook around him on the most important day of his life.
Jon had never had a cousin in Roger since the moment he was born. Yet he remembers looking up at Roger and seeing the sun, remembers basking in the rays as only a child could. I’m happy to follow you around, Jon had said once.
Now, full of despair, he asks, “Have you ever been loved as we loved you?”
The Gate stares back at him, a mute and concrete barrier Jon will never cross.

This is quietly beautiful, and so very emotional all the same. The emotions in this piece are understated but so distinct; reading it is a beautiful thing
