And so another year ends! It seems crazy that only two years ago, I was wrapping up the Piercefic competition (Goldenlake's early incarnation). So much has happened in the last two years, and I’m feeling a bit nostalgic and soppy, that it only seems right to reflect on it all!
Goldenlake has grown into a thriving board. We have a calendar stuffed full of events, a dedicated team of moderators and a varied and active member base. Our Library of fic is stuffed to the brim, and the quality of fanart is only getting better. The chatroom always seems to have something going on, and so many of us have become friends outside of Goldenlake too. The board is not far off 85,000 posts and contains almost 400 members. We count amongst our projects a fanfiction archive of almost 1.5 million words, a growing wiki and resources site, a cookbook, a (soon to be released) yearbook, several livejournal communities, and of course this fanzine (in its seventh issue). By all means, we’re a pretty awesome community of fans!
Which brings me to my point – Goldenlake is a community. We’ve done things more notable than fandoms ten times our size. Nothing could be accomplished, though, without such amazing staff and members. Every writer who has participated in a challenge, every reviewer who has supported a competition, every artist who has shared their icons, every member who supplied their favourite recipe, every debater who has argued that Roger really isn’t that bad (HE ISN’T!) – they’ve all contributed to what makes Goldenlake Goldenlake.
I decided, in honour of 2010, to share ten reasons why Goldenlake was great this year:
1. We survived SMACKDOWN: I know we don’t talk about it much - but seriously guys, we can basically survive anything now.
2. We can all write sentences: that was the point of one sentence week, right?
3. We can all talk like pirates: Argggggh. Themed word filters = epic fun!
4. We celebrated Royals, Minor Characters, and the Military: we also celebrated Alternate Universes and Secrets and Lies, in our various themed weeks.
5. We love Wyldon AND Dom: with weeks celebrating both characters (and the huge amount of fic the two go during SMACKDOWN) it’s safe to say both boys are very well looked after at Glake.
6. We now hang out every month: monthly chats have been great fun, and will continue on the first Sunday of every month!
7. Peculiar Pairings have been just as popular as canon ones: In fact, I would probably argue that we celebrate unusual pairings more... maybe we’ll need to start challenges involving canon characters, haha.
8. The Kings Own has almost hit 1.5 million words: Yeah, we’re THAT awesome!!!!
9. The Holiday season will be EPIC: From exchanges to missives and cracky-bingo, we’re going to have a fabulous December!
10. Not everyone hates Roger: Okay, maybe Rogerlake wasn’t exactly voluntary, but it was awesome fun!
I would like to especially thank Ubiquitous, Rosie, Lisafer, Verasque and all the mods for all their help and support throughout the year. A super huge thanks goes to Ubiquitous, for all her beautiful layouts, banners and buttons, as well as her efforts holding down the fort during my various absences.
I have the pleasure of announcing that several changes have been made to staffing over the last month. The lovely Rosie will be stepping up as an Assistant Administrator, and overseeing the operations side of the board. Journeycat, our wonderful resident events director/p0rnbot, will be filling her shoes as a Global Moderator. Max and Inthefire have also stepped up as moderators.
Finally, this marks a full year for Wordy and Minuit as editors as Giantkiller. They have done a magnificent job over the past year, and I applaud them for their tireless efforts and infinite patience! This will be Minuit’s last issue as co-editor due to work commitments, and I wish her well! Wordy will be continuing on as editor. Cassandra, a six-issue veteran of Giantkiller, has stepped up as the Assistant Editor, and will be supporting Wordy. I know the two of them will do a great job with the fanzine in 2011!
Happy Holidays everyone!
