What are your favorite things that cheer you up after a crappy day? Alcohol/drugs don't count. For me it's watching either The Lion King or The Last Unicorn, listening to the soundtrack from The Horse Whisperer, being with horses, hot chocolate with marshmallows, and TP books.

Depending on why I the day was crappy I enjoy watching Pride and Prejudice (the 95 BBC version) or other Jane Austen movies, I enjoy reading cheesy romance books or Austen when I need to get into a world where dreams work out. I enjoy reading Pratchett when I want to laugh. I enjoy loud music when I need to get rid of aggression (EBM Electronic works pretty well) I enjoy music with meaningful lyrics when I am in love troubles - oh and the loud stuff because I am usually also angry when that happens). Chips (crips for you Brits) are sadly my number one comfort food, followed by chocolate (naturally), cake, pizza and some peppermint candy. (Not good for the figure I grant you). I loved cadbury's hot chocolate as a treat for sad days, but I don't do well with milk anymore and I don't like soy milk (or lactose free milk). Sometimes my childhood books help the most (Bille und Zottel - a horsebook; Narnia, Tamora Pierce, some Enid Blyton stuff).
I can lose myself easily in a good book and forget the world for hours.

Reading so far has proved the most consistent way to distract myself from the trials of life. Also talking to a friend works, so long as I'm not actually angry, or wandering off into a rainstorm if I am.

I have all kinds of things for this.
- Food: (I'm from a culture that gives food at every possibility): - Tea: Orange pekoe if I'm in a general 'I want tea to make me feel better' mood. Peppermint tea is reserved for stomach nastiness and colds. - If I'm fidgety or stressed, anything that I can chew on - hard candies like Lifesavers or peppermints - or gum. - Ice cream, if I have it. If I don't, even a glass of milk'll do. - Mac and cheese (also known as the old, out-of-a-box Canadian standby called 'Kraft Dinner.') - Soup or canned stews. (Canned stew is so not the real thing, but I only get homemade stew a couple of times a year, so the rest of the time, I have make do with canned.) - Chicken pot pies.
Books?:
Tammy's books - specifically, ROTG and the original Circle quartet. 'Good Omens' - Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. 'How to Be A Canadian' - Will Ferguson and Ian Ferguson. (Self-depreciating humour FTW.)
Don't have movies, instead, I have music: - '50s American rock for when I need to smile. It's the birth of rock and roll and simple and happy. - Angry rock, eg. AC/DC, The Clash, The Sex Pistols - for when I need to be angry. - 'Old' country. Yes, I know, country music is usually in the vein of depressing, but I link it with childhood and better times pretty strongly in my head, so it works. - Stuff that's worth dancing like an idiot to, eg. 'Blue Suede Shoes', the Beatles' straight pop hits, ABBA, The Band's 'Rag Mama Rag', some regional music (bagpipes! And kitchen parties!), 'Mannish Boy', 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', 'Brown Sugar' - you get the drift.

Disney films are my comfort viewing, although they usually make me cry! Combined with popcorn or BBQ Pringles. Alternatively a good book does the trick.

Puppies and ice cream usually do the trick. There's a pet store right across from an ice cream shop I love, and whenever I'm depressed or friends are down, we go there.
Also, listening to Tesla's "Love Song" always manages to cheer me up.
If not that, I put on a favorite movie. ("Enemy at the Gates", "Down With Love" or "Master & Commander; the Far Side of the World" will do the trick usually.)

When I can, I go to my vacation home up in the mountains. I love it there. It's on a lake in the middle of a forest, and it's far enough away from home and school and friends and stress that I can go there and be whoever I want. Mostly I take my dog out walking and meet all kinds of people. The community is so dog friendly, and mile-long walks turn into three hour affairs because in every cove is a new dog to play with and owners to chat with. Sometimes, though not often, I'll even take the boat out and fly around the lake for a while. There's nothing like whizzing around in a world-class wakeboard boat to put a smile on your face. In the winter, I curl up in front of the fireplace and drink hot chocolate and watch the snow fall [which is a novelty, because there's no snow at home]. In the summer, I love looking at all the stars at night, because I also don't get those at home. One week every summer, I go there for a family camp and get to see all my friends. Then we stay at a resort instead of our vacation home. At night, my friends and I will go out to the tennis courts which are still warm from the day, and lie there and watch shooting stars and talk. It's so wonderful and relaxing. I can't help but be happy when I'm in the mountians.
Edit: No matter where I am, I eat chocolate like a crazy woman. That helps too =P

Oh, The Lion King! That's what my friends and I at university do. We're friends with a lot of uber-Christians who wake up at the crack of 7 to go to church Sunday mornings, so we sleep in and then watch The Lion King as our religion. We named TLK religion "Mufasianism" and we believe in hakuna matata and feeling the love tonight. <3. I was named the Oracle/Prophetess of our group! Chuckles.
That said, I tend to watch Harold and Maude, play my ukulele (teaching myself), write or read. Reading more when I'm on school time. On break it tends to be reading fanfic or writing.
ETA - Chocolate, definitely. Which I am excited to consume after I take my shower. =)

I tend to not wake up much past 8 on the weekends through sheer force of my stupid circadian rhythm's will. * Food: Hot chocolate with marshmallows, cheese and carbs. Pasta, rice, bread, tortillas ... if it puts me in a carb coma I am happy. And chocolate. I get hormonal chocolate cravings like no one's business. Movies: The Evil Dead 3: Bruce Campbell vs the Army of Darkness, Night of the Living Dead Return of the Living Dead (parts i and ii). I love terrible zombie movies. TV: Stargate SG-1 and due South Books: Tammy is my go-to author for comfort reading over and above any other. Very good for escapism.

Due South, Candice?
You mean 'dorky-Mountie-stuck-in-Chicago' Due South?
Yay. That show has probably encouraged so many misconceptions about Canadians, but it's STILL awesome.

Candice, I didn't realize you were an Evil Dead/Army of Darkness fan. Be sure to check out the Evil Dead musical. The fellow playing Ash does Campbell's voice *perfectly* and it's hysterical - it's a mash up of ED1, ED2 and Army of Darkness, and actually has a "splash zone" in the first several rows because it's so gory.

Yep, due South! I went on a Paul Gross kick a while back (starting with Men with Brooms), and then marathoned due South and Slings & Arrows. It's so cheesy and generally hilarious that it makes me very happy.
I love the Evil Dead - I spent most of last summer watching Army of Darkness over ... and over ... and over again with my mom, because it was one of approximately five movies that's mutually agreeable to us. We're still trying to track down Evil Dead 2. (And I so want to see the musical. It sounds hilarious, and I would absolutely want a seat in the splash zone.)

Re: due South... I have to say that some of the in-jokes and references may be lost on an American... but that's why you have Canadians! To explain the jokes, right? To explain WHY Fraser's dog is called 'Dief'.

I totally read up on the references via wikipedia & tvtropes after watching the series through. While said references in all their contextual glory continue to fly over my head, I can point them out if called upon!

Ah, embarrassed laughter! I didn't even notice the colouration change and never hovered over it. Blushes. That's something I would normally catch and I would especially hover over a host I don't understand! Ah well, at least it's ample opportunity to laugh at myself--I quite like doing that. And on to the link with me!
Edit - Alright, that certainly added to the laughter! I love that video! I feel delightfully silly sitting around a house alone laughing at a Muppets video. According to psychologists a BBC show quoted, we are apparently supposed to laugh at least 12 times a day. I think this posts covers me for two if not more. =) Thank you!

The Mahna Mahna thing made my day. Thankyou, lhazel! Candice - 7:00 mass is fun. ;D If I'm angry I go and crash around on my piano (I don't recommend playing fortissimo for more than 10 minutes though; hurts!!). If I'm sad I read cheesy romance, and eat soggy weetbix with sugar on top - works every time!

Smiles. I'm glad, lhazel! This thread helped me feel quite a bit better as well. Currently, too. Work is overwhelming and now my laptop is acting up so I have to use my uncle's computer in his office.
Perhaps I'll throw in Harold and Maude and it can put my life back into perspective.
(I also totally agree on the soggy wheatabix front, with lots of sugar! Wish I had some in the house but that would require gathering the bus fare and going out to the store. I should stay and work. D:)

Wh-- what's wheatabix and why is it soggy?
(Sugary cereal, omg. Sugary cereal like lucky charms or capn crunch or COCO PUFFS. or reese's peabut butter puffs! they're all awesome for when you're just too darn tired to stick something in the microwave or when it's too hot to eat anything cooked.)

You made me drool on my keyboard by saying Reese's. I love that cereal too much. I could eat it for the rest of my life (which would, probably, be short). Wheetabix: www.weetabix.co.uk/ They're excellent when allowed to get soggy with milk and when covered in sugar. <3. I also like it with fruit!
