Kel finished her sketching in the air; hands steady despite the ticking presence of Alanna’s fingers scoring the inside of her wrist.
“So you see,” she said. “In Yaman, it’s often on wall-hangings. I asked Mama what it meant, once, and she whacked me with her fan.”
“Sure way to get you more interested.”
“Well, afterward, she sat me down and explained everything, very gravely. Made it sound so boring that I went off to look at the fish.”
“Ah,” Alanna sighed mournfully. “Good parenting.”
“It wouldn’t work for us anyway,” said Kel, as Alanna trapped one and and brought the palm to her lips. “Height discrepancies aren’t really—what?”
“—You, my girl, sometimes lose your sense of adventure. Yaman has interesting wall hangings.”
