"She's dead, Neal," came Merric's weary reply as Kel sat down to their table in the library.
Neal shook his head. "She's still far more beautiful than any woman alive," he retorted indignantly.
Kel fought the urge to roll her eyes at his antics, instead looking to Seaver for an explanation.
"He's in love with a girl he saw in a book," he mock-whispered to Kel, earning him a glare from Neal.
Neal looked at Kel, his green eyes bright. "Not a girl. A lady. A lady knight," he said beatifically, thrusting a book in her face. “Her name is Sabine of Macayhill. Isn’t she lovely?”
Kel’s heart sank as she saw the painting. The lady knight was lovely, far lovelier than she could ever be. She knew then she would never win Neal’s heart.
