The preparation had all been a blur. His cleansing bath Zahir and his knight master’s voices had echoed in his ears.
He now knelt on the cold flagstones of the chapel eyes shut, face pale.
He was scared like every other squire who had knelt here but he had every reason to. He had let the most important thing in his life go for stupidity. He only realised that now.
He closed his eyes he was thirteen again.
“It’s for practice, I intend on adding extra weights in order to build my dexterity and strength.”
The blacksmith raised one dark eyebrow then took the lance along with the coins the boy had produced.
Numbness in his knees forced him to remember his current place as he shifted his position back then she had meant nothing to him, if anything she had been his sole nemesis it had all changed of course the previous year, it was the best week of his life.
He relived those days their first kiss, the nights they spent together the long afternoons that turned into night as they wandered through town, buying her gifts. He remembered the necklace he had bought her a silver sparrow spreading its wings its upturned head gazing up at her it comforted him.
A harrowing noise brought him back to reality it was the creaking of a door a Mithran priest stood by the open door beckoning him to go in.
Joren stood up awkwardly and walked towards the door attempting to stretch out his knees. The door closed behind him he was cast in darkness.
Kel had watched him go inside he hadn’t noticed her seated in a bench at the back she didn’t know what had made her come the Joren she had loved was dead the Joren that now was in the Chamber of Ordeal was the same man who had put lead in her lance and breathed so that she may get sent home as a failer. But she had truly thought he had changed, certain of it, that even he couldn’t act that well.
Joren had been standing there for a while now staring into darkness, he was almost tempted to find the door and leave when a gust of wind surrounded him. An image was projected in front of him it was blurry at first, he squinted at it as it became clearer, he almost gasped as Kel’s laughing face adjusted. Her beautiful hazel eyes beamed down on him her eyelashes elegantly framing them. How did it know, then he almost smacked his head with stupidity, the chamber knew everything.
That’s right, a disturbing voice, sexless originating from his head. He almost gasped again but held his tongue.
Kels face disappeared replaced by Zahir’s leering face. He instantly recognised the scene, it was the night he had allowed his friends to persuade him. He knew it was for kel’s protection though, wasn’t it?
The scene changed again he instantly recognised kel’s room. Kel lay on her bed her eyes red. The sight almost made him laugh, Kel didn’t cry. She suddenly sat up straight grabbed something from around her neck and hurled it out of her window towards the full moon. With horror Joren realised it was the sparrow necklace.
Its not only her life you affected
Images of his mother, father other family members, kel’s maid, younger pages even squires, his knight master stood there, even the King and queen flashed before his eyes.
Joren now stood there sword in hand he stood at the top of a cliff something formless floated in front of him a black hole it began to glow consuming him red sparks flew out of it, wind swirled once again he was lifted off his feet, he bit back a cry as pain surged through his body he attempted to swipe at the thing with his sword when it grew too heavy for him and fell to the surging waters below.
He suddenly forgot he was in the ordeal,
“No” he whimpered
“I have to see her, I have to say I’m sorry”
“shhh,” a cooling hand now touched his forehead that felt as if it was going to rip out of his head.
“It’s ok, relax everything’s going to be ok” the voice faltered he then heard sobbing.
He forced his eyelids open they felt heavy as lead
“Kel managed to rasp
Kel face consumed his vision, her eyes red she forced a smile onto her face
“I’m here” she leaned down and kissed his lips
He was about to close his eyes when he remembered something
“The necklace”
She looked surprised at first then smiled
“I spent that night looking for it.” She pulled a silver chain out of her shirt. The free bird floated in front of him, free.
