Title: Her Eyes Are Fully Open
Rating: PG
Length: 355 words
Competitor: Wyldon
Round/Fight: 1/A
Summary: After taking a love-potion and mooning over Wyldon, Kel has to make her apologies. (Sequel to #9)
“I wanted to apologize for yesterday’s meeting, my lord,” Kel said, unable to meet his eyes. “For being so… distracted..”
Wyldon poured cider and gestured for her to sit down. “I have four daughters, Mindelan. I can understand what love-potions can do to a girl.” His wide mouth twitched with the beginnings of a smile. “It was interesting to see you swoon, when Queenscove was dragging you out of here.”
“It was purely accidental, I assure you. I was supposed to have been given a clarifying draught.”
“They’re remarkably similar.”
“Really?” She finally looked him in the eyes.
“Love potions – so I’m told,” he added hastily, “are designed to open your eyes to something that you hadn’t realized was there. They don’t make you fall in love with someone, they merely show you aspects of a person that had been overlooked. That’s why there’s no nonsense about people falling in love with the first person they see, or any other ridiculous notions that come from the romantic tales.”
Kel flushed. “So, when I was admiring Neal’s eyes—”
He nodded. “It means you find them attractive in your normal state – you were just more attuned to the sensations of longing.”
Her eyes widened in mortification, remembering how she had analyzed so many little details about Lord Wyldon. And how she had been imagining his lips and hands on her. Now that she recalled those heated daydreams, she couldn’t help but study his hands as new images played across her mind.
“Keladry,” he began, his mouth curving into that slight smile she’d noticed the evening before, with the last syllable of her name. “Let’s forget this nonsense and go forward with the meeting as originally planned.” He tapped her report with one blunt finger. “You stated here that you lost five men in the last raid?”
“Y-Yes, sir,” she said, trying to push the other thoughts from her mind. But it was no use – the potion had made some things in the world clearer to her. And now she had to struggle to ignore all those little nuances that she’d discovered that she liked about him.
