“Have you had any bleeding?”
“No.”
“Any pains, cramping, that sort of thing?”
“My back aches a little.”
“That’s normal. It’s straining against the rapid weight gain.”
Baird gently rubbed her swollen belly with his hands, and Keladry watched nervously as his palms glowed with green fire; it was a little disconcerting to know that he was performing magic on her unborn baby.
“It seems normal,” he said finally, giving her a kind smile. “Do you want to know the gender?”
“You can tell that?”
“The baby is well-developed. I can probe it with my magic and outline it’s shape to know.”
She thought about it, absently stroking her stomach, before smiling tentatively. “I’d like to know.”
Baird placed his hands, again bright green, on her belly for a couple seconds. She felt a pleasant rush of heat and the baby stirred a little before settling once again.
He said, “Lady Knight, you are having a son.”
Her heart skipped a beat. “A son?”
“Indeed,” Baird said, looking pleased for her. He was such a good man; she had no idea what she would have done without him these past seven months. Neal couldn’t examine her without pestering her with questions about the paternity, trying to trick her into revealing things she didn’t want him to know, but Baird just took care of her and asked nothing.
“Are you going to tell the father?” he continued, turning away and beginning to prepare one of his pregnancy potions.
Kel sensed that he wasn’t being nosy, but was simply curious. “I,” she began. “Well, I don’t know. We don’t speak much anymore.”
“I see,” Baird said simply. When he turned back to face her, he met her eyes with an appraising look. “Some men aren’t good at expressing their feelings. It doesn’t mean they don’t care. Sometimes circumstances are out of their control, like if they’re to be in an arranged marriage, or if they’re not willing to settle down, or even if they’re already married.”
Startled, she gave him a hard look. “Your Grace?”
“Just food for thought, my dear. And I’ll tell you this—even though I’m in a happy marriage, I would very much want to know if I had fathered any children outside of it.”
He left the infirmary room, and Kel stared after him wondering just how much he knew.
