Flick, flick, swish. Metal wings clicked and flapped in the still air – sharp and deadly. Flick, swish, flick. Steal feathers rustled and reflected the cold moonlight – smooth and glistening. Swish, flick, flick.
Kel looked up, only to see a flash of movement out the corner of her eye. Spinning around, she tried to track it. All she could see was shadows and fog, enveloping the night sky – the silvery moon just peeking out above a canopy of trees and clouds.
Flick, flick, swish. Metal scraped against wood – a sharp and grating sound. Flick, swish, flick. Metal grating against metal – a pain to her ears. Swish, flick, flick.
“Who’s there?” She called – voice echoing in the night. “Show yourself.” She paused and listened. Only silence was her answer – all around her was eerily still – not a chirp or a peep or a bark. “What do you want?”
Flick, flick, swish. A head rose above the clouds – studying her intently. Flick, swish, flick. Long blond braids fell over bright green eyes – lips quirked invitingly. Swish, flick, flick.
“I am here. Come find me Keladry. You are what I want.” It whispered.
“Who are you?” Kel demanded, not understanding what she was seeing.
A sharp burst of frigid wind cleared the clouds. Kel stared in confusion at the departing shadow – occasional flashes of moonlight winking at her. “I am Rikash ...” The wind carried the voice past her ears, tickling the hair on the back of her neck.
The rest of the words were lost, as Kel bolted upright in her bed, drenched in a cold sweat.
