Title: Sallying Rating: G Length: 210 Competitor: Baird Round: 1/D Summary: Baird is surprised at breakfast
The breakfast tray. A privilege of rank clung to with desperate hands, before days that could rarely sort themselves one minute to the next. A moment of silence before coughs and groans. Tea, before all that; still in porcelain and sweeter that way, carefully cupped and swallowed as sunrise gilded his windows.
The breakfast tray. Familiar and welcome, with a strange, paper guest.
Duke Baird of Queenscove, Corus.
Your Grace, I’m not entirely sure if letter-writing is whimsical. Yours was full of thanks, and thanking someone can convey important information. Still, I was not expecting it!
I do—despite a small, appalled moment where I was Yamani and seven again, when you said you could read my face—return your thanks. You saved me from what was going to be a dire evening. The good sort of chivalry, that doesn’t belong to maidens and chambers and being able to hit people in crucial ways. Of course I couldn’t just ignore your letter.
Nothing to report here. Rain and indoor quarterstaff training. The echoes are a very particular sort of mad racket. I hope you’re well, as always.
Your friend, Kel.
Postscript: Neal always blamed his illegible hand on being a healer. Clearly, I was gullible, since you seem readable enough.

Oh, this old-fashioned courtship is lovely. And I like the nod to doctors' scrawls.
