Title: With Great Power
Rating: G
Prompt: #12 Behind Closed Doors
Summary: A look at how Tortall's royals behave behind closed doors.
Roald I
He worries. He worries, running his hand through his beard over and over again, but nothing becomes clearer. It's not something you'd say out loud, not the kind of thing you'd announce to your advisors, but Roald has a feeling. Sometimes he lies awake at night, thinking about the city, his people, the crops, the war - and still the feeling remains. It is not the prospect of something bad happening that does this to him. It's the uncertainty.
Lianne
As she grows weaker, the only thing on her mind is her son. It breaks her heart that she feels this way. She has been in love with her husband for as long as she's known him, but when her son - her only son, her baby boy - is in danger and his future unknown (when she realises her sick bed has become her death bed), all other thoughts pale in comparison. Is this what it means, to be a mother?
Jonathon
It's difficult to be a good king. Because sometimes...he has to be the bad guy.
Thayet
She didn't want this. But fate had a different plan, it seemed. She does what she can for her people; she builds schools, forms the Riders, helps where she can. It doesn't change how she feels though, this helplessness. Sometimes, she dreams of jumping from the top of a tower - her people would cry and scream, but perhaps they would truly love her.
Roald II
He shows his mask. Polite. Happy. Perhaps that is why he could finally love Shinko - she wore a mask too.
Kalasin
What she hates about being royalty is not the fact that she had to give up her dream to marry a foreigner - no. She hates that she understands why.
Liam
He knows who he was named for, though no one ever talks of it. One day, though, Liam decides, his name is going to be remembered for a different reason.
Jasson II
Despite having so many siblings (not to mention Naxen cousins) Jasson can never quite rid himself of the feeling that he is the spare.
Lianne II
It's hard to live in her sister's shadow. It's even harder still to find her way out of it.
Vania
She rides with the Queen's Ladies and waits for her father to arrange her marriage. Her mother would be shocked with her, Vania smiles, to know what goes on behind closed doors.
EDIT: Oh alright, I couldn't resist.
Roger
He hums as he picks out his finest pair of sparkly hose. "Alex!" he calls out, before remembering that poor Alex is dead. And he was such a fine dancer, Roger mourns. Shaking his head, King Roger finally settles on the purple hose - to match his purple and gold tunic. Ever since he killed whatshername and her bendy brother (him too? why do all his lovers end up dead?), he has taken pleasure in wearing as much purple as possible.
