She made Lalasa try each defense on her, since the maid refused to touch Neal... By the time they had walked the cringing Lalasa through it all, an audience had gathered at Kel's open door.
"Where did you learn all that?" Owen breathed, his eyes wide.
"Some I learned at the Yamani court," Kel replied calmly, gulping down a cup of water. Some, Eda Bell taught me this summer."
"I'm going to treat you with the reverence I reserve for the Crown Jewels," Roald assured her, his eyes crinkled with mirth.
"Me too," added Seaver and Merric.

Merric bounded into Faleron's room and flopped down on to his bed. "Faleron, you should have been there to see it for yourself! Kel is absolutely the most amazing girl in the entire realm! She can do things I've never seen anybody do before!"
"Calm down, Merric!" Faleron ordered. "And get off my bed! You're making a mess of it."
Merric sat up and stared at his cousin. "What's the matter with you? Don't you want to hear about what I just saw Kel do?"
Faleron sighed. "Fine," he said. "But make it quick. Study time is almost over and I'm not finished with this essay."
Giggling, Merric said, "That's because you spent all your time flirting with Kel while she helped you with those math problems during our group study session."
"You'd better take that back!" Faleron growled in a low, menacing tone of voice, "I don't flirt with Kel; I have only the highest respect for her, and you know it!"
"Oh, alright," Merric conceded. "I guess you weren't really flirting with Kel. It's just that, well, she spends an awful lot of time helping you. But I suppose that's to be expected since we all know that you're as dumb as a rock when it comes to geometry."
Faleron threw a wadded-up piece of paper at Merric, who easily ducked away. Then the redheaded page stood up and began to tell his cousin about all the hits, kicks, holds and jabs Kel put Neal through in order to teach her maid, Lalasa, how to defend herself. It all sounded so fascinating and Faleron hated that he missed seeing Kel in action, but after his cousin's comment about flirting, he thought it was probably just as well.
Merric finished talking about the self-defense lesson and leaned against the window sill. "You, know, I think the prince likes Kel. And Cleon, too."
"Everyone likes Kel - even you, Merric." Faleron said, trying unsuccessfully to hide the bitterness in his voice.
Merric shook his head, "Not everyone. Not Joren and his lot. But the prince said he would treat Kel with reverence. I think that's what I'll do, too."
Faleron didn't reply. Reverence, he thought. Yes, that's exactly what Kel deserves - from all of us.
