“I’m having a hard time understanding what’s going on.”
Jonathan rubbed his eyes and gazed hopefully back and forth between Raoul and Gareth. Both of them wore similar stumped expressions.
“Okay,” the king sighed. “Let me get this straight. Masbolle is up in arms because Owen of Jesslaw killed Domitan, right?”
“Yes,” Gary confirmed, “because the sergeant killed Sir Wyldon of Cavall because they were both after Lady Knight Keladry’s hand.”
“Which is why Cavall is up in arms against Masbolle,” Jon nodded.
“But Cavall is a little divided, since it’s recently discovered Kel—Keladry of Mindelan—is pregnant with Wyldon’s child,” Raoul added.
“But Owen of Jesslaw is also a potential father,” Gary said. “And his wife is out for Mindelan’s blood.”
“Oh, and Queenscove is pretty angry as well,” Raoul said. “Apparently the zombie that Owen killed—Sabine was her name?—was in fact Duke Baird’s ancestor. So, er—we have a bit of a civil war brewing.”
“I’ll handle that issue with Baird,” Jon said grimly. “Sabine did, after all, kill my daughter. But I can’t help you about Sir Nealan—you did kill his remaining son, you know.”
“And the countess of King’s Reach sent me a very nasty letter,” Raoul grumbled. He lifted up his shriveled, scarred hand. “It was filled with acid. She took exception to me killing her son, apparently.”
“Faleron killed that Stormwing, Rikash,” Gary reminded him. “He was a bit of a hero.”
“I’m pretty sure Rikash was killed in the Immortals War, fighting on our side.”
“A common misconception.”
Jonathan threw down his quill and said, “Damn it all, what has happened to Tortall?”
