Length: 282 words
Character: Wyldon
Summary: Kel receives an offer, and finds that her husband is the best to advise her.
Kel stepped walked into the study, letter in hand. “Wyldon, I need to go to Corus.”
“New orders?”
“Kind of.” She leaned against his desk and handed him the missive. “The king wants me to be the page training master, and I should give my answer in person.”
He read it quickly, then removed his glasses and gazed up at her. “What are you thinking?”
She shrugged. “My king requested it.”
“You still have the right to refuse, Keladry.”
“You didn’t.”
He smiled wryly. “That doesn’t mean I didn’t want to.”
“Why did you agree?”
“I thought I had something to offer the realm. I liked the notion of having a more permanent position in the realm, since my wife and children were only a day’s ride away.” He sighed. “But mainly I took it because my king asked it of me.”
“Would you come to Corus if I took it?” she asked, taking his hand in her own.
“I could for part of the year, at least,” he said finally. “I need to be here for the harvest, and I like to help with the breeding, though I’m willing to leave someone else in charge.”
“What would we do about Ewain?”
“In three years he’ll be a page.”
“Should I take him to Corus until then, though?”
He shook his head. “I’ll keep him with me. It will be no worse than when you have border patrol – we’ll be only a day’s ride away, after all.” He returned the letter, studying her carefully. “You’re going to take it, aren’t you?”
“I like teaching,” she said with a small smile. “Do you think I’ll be good enough?”
“I think you’ll be incredible.”
