Buri is not in her room when Kel knocks on the door before stepping inside. The bed is made and the washbasin is empty and dry. Had she forgotten about going into town? Kel wonders. Frowning, she looks around and toward the window, fixing her eyes on the Rider barracks. The Riders are all training that afternoon – Kel knows, because she is friends with one or two of them and had dined with them in the mess that morning – but she certainly wouldn’t put it past the former Commander to make a surprise inspection.
“Buri?” she calls as she enters the stables, glancing around for any sign of her friend. “Buri, I’ve been looking forward to this trip all week! Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten. Buri?”
She pushes open the door to the tack room, wondering only briefly why it is closed before freezing in the doorway. Her friend is tangled around blond Evin Larse, tunic missing and shirt hanging open. Kel makes some kind of noise because suddenly both former and current commanders are turning to face her, stricken looks on all their faces.
In one motion, Kel turns and is gone, striding away from the stable as fast as her legs can carry her. There are a hundred things going through her mind – Evin’s age, their lives together before Buri’s retirement, but most of all, she’s thinking Raoul.
“Kel!”
Buri chases after her, holding her shirt closed with one hand. “Kel, please, wait!” The smaller woman is fast, and she catches Kel’s arm, hanging on when Kel would have shaken her off. “Please listen to me!”
Kel turns, face Yamani smooth. “Is there anything to listen to?” she asks coolly. “Shall I remind you that he is not only too young, but that he was once under your command? Shall I remind you that you have a husband waiting for you upstairs?”
“Please!” Buri is begging now, staring at Kel earnestly. “Please, Kel, he can’t know. Raoul can never know. Promise me!”
It is the hardest thing she’s ever done but Buri is a friend, and so reluctantly she makes her promise. “He won’t know.”
Later, Raoul is looking for his wife, and he comes to Kel’s room as she watches Evin walking Buri back to the palace through the window. He won’t know, she had promised, and so before he can come any closer, Kel has both her hands in his hair and is kissing him until he stops thinking.
