Title: Last Kiss
Rating: G
Length: 292
Competitor: Dom
Round/Fight: 1/A
Summary: Kel says goodbye to Dom. Warning for character death!
It wasn’t like the first time they kissed. Then it had been sweet and soft, eager and new. Dom was gentle with her, a luxury Kel had never been afforded living in a world of rough men. She’d told him it was stupid, but he had insisted on treating her like a lady when they arrived back in Corus; taking her to dinners in the town and leaving gifts that cost more of his modest Own salary than she was comfortable with.
This time it was different. Raoul and Baird hovered just beyond the thin infirmary curtain, giving them what privacy they could. Neal crouched on the other side of his cousin, his eyes bright with unshed tears; he had refused to leave Dom’s bedside, even for Kel.
Dom lay weak and limp before her. His skin was pale, his blue eyes dull. Her lover was disappearing before her, dying of a battle injury he took to save one of his men. The only part of Dom with any life was his lips; and it killed Kel to know that he was using the last of his energy to try to soothe her.
This kiss was wet with her tears; tears for yesterdays they’d wasted, and tomorrows they’d never have. Tears for the summers and autumns and winters and springs that would pass without him. Tears for the smiles that wouldn’t come and the children they’d never have. Tears for her empty bed and her broken heart. Tears for the lives that wouldn’t be saved, because he was gone and she’d given up.
She choked on a sob as he pulled away. His voice rasped in his throat, and he struggled to keep his eyes open so he could see her one last time. “Kel... I’m... so sorry.”
And with that, he was gone.
