Title: Someone Else
Rating: PG
Length: 415 words
Summary: AU that Thom and Alanna (disguised as Alan) both went to the palace to train to become pages. This takes place a few months after they were both knighted and Alanna killed Duke Roger. Delia of Eldorne realizes that the newly knighted Thom of Trebond cannot serve her purpose to resurrect Roger of Conté. His twin wouldn’t allow it.
Delia of Eldorne observed the ballroom coolly, her eyes flitting over the crowd of courtiers. Since Alan – no, Alanna now – of Trebond had killed Roger of Conté, Delia had one goal only: to find a way to bring her lover back. His instructions had been specific, and she only had to find a mage powerful enough to fulfill his orders. He had been suspicious of Alanna, then Alan, of Trebond from the start, and had made sure to have a back up plan incase she killed him, never truly thinking she would.
There the little minx was now, standing with the prince. The monarchs had actually not been upset when the relationship between Jonathan of Conté and his former squire had been revealed. They said Alanna was “an asset to the empire”, and wanted to keep both her and her brother with them at court.
Alanna’s twin, Thom of Trebond, stood at the edge of the room, observing the celebrations in much the same way as Delia did. He shared the same violet eyes and Gift as his sister; in fact he could have been a powerful sorcerer if he had not tried for his knighthood.
Thom of Trebond had a powerful Gift, and he wasn’t as suspicious of Roger as his twin. He never had been’ in fact he was fascinated with the older mage.
Thom was a definite candidate for the mage to bring Roger back – that is, he would have been if not for his relationship with Alanna. They both had the tempers to match their bright red hair, and most often the twins were at odds with each other. They agreed on nothing trivial, and yet shared the same sense of honor, honed by their years together as pages and then squires. Thom told his twin everything, and he supported her one hundred percent in her decision to kill Roger. As much as Thom admired Roger’s magical capabilities, he knew the Duke had been a threat to the royal family.
Alanna met Delia’s eyes across the room, her lavender eyes narrowed. Delia knew Alanna did not like her; furthermore, the knight would do anything to keep her twin away from Roger’s former confidant.
Delia sighed, moving once more toward the crowed dance floor. Thom was powerful, but so was Alanna, and there was no one the twins cared about more than each other. Thom would not be her device to bring the Duke back. She would have to find someone else.
