Title: Playing in the Dirt (2)
Rating: PG
Length: 318
Summary: Emelan!fic, the second in a series of short drabbles. Modernish AU. Briar/Sandry.
Author’s Notes: I've decided I'm going to switch between Briar and Sandry's POVs in this series. It shouldn't be too confusing though.
“I’ve decided I want some tulips.”
Briar turned around and squinted up at Sandry, shading his eyes. From this angle, all he could see was her standing there, hands planted on her hips, backlit by the sun. The light caught some golden strands in her light brown hair, which was today tied back in a loose plait. “Tulips?” he asked.
“Yes,” she said.
He looked at her for a moment, trying to figure out this sudden request. First she had wanted him to fix everything her last gardeners had made a mess of. That had been difficult enough, though she had let him arrange the gardens any way he wanted. Then she had asked for roses. Then lavender bordering the fence. And now it was tulips.
Sandry shifted uncomfortably under his gaze and Briar quickly looked away, realising he had been staring at her as he thought. “Well?” she demanded. “Can you do it?”
“Of course,” he said. She smiled at him then, clasping her hands together, and he felt himself smiling as well. Leaning back until his elbows rested on the grass, he asked, “Did you want any colour in particular?”
“I’m sure anything you choose will be fine,” she said.
Briar nodded. “I think some variegated ones will do nicely.”
“Variegated?” she said the word uncertainly, and for a moment he found himself looking at her lips. Maybe some pink tulips too, he thought, before looking away.
“Variegated,” he repeated. “You know, the ones that have two colours kind of swirled together?”
“Oh, that sounds pretty,” she said.
“Very pretty.”
When he looked her in the eye she blushed slightly and looked away. “Let me know when you find them, then,” she said, and without another word she turned and walked back to the house. Briar watched her go, then sat up and got back to his work. He was suddenly in a much better mood.
