Title: Motherless Children, Pt. II.
Rating: G
Length: 331 words
Summary: Dren Sarrasri confronts the Lioness in a temper, in defense of his twin.
Author’s Notes: Set within rainstormamaya's 'May You Live in Interesting Times' AU: Daine has a twin brother, Dren, and Numair has been replaced by his female equivalent, Giacinta. Yes, this is a scene borrowed from Wild Magic, but altered.
"Great Merciful Mother!"
Dren jumped, startled, and looked up at the shout, setting down his tools.
"You—girl, come here!" The Lioness stalked out of a tent, her purple eyes blazing with fury. She had changed out of her mail and now wore just plain breeches and a shirt, her sleeves rolled up past her elbows.
Daine made no sound and shrank back as if she wanted to blend in with the ponies. Tahoi stood at Daine's side, his hackles up as he growled a warning. Dren crossed to stand in front of his twin and leaned down to try to quiet Onua's great dog.
"Easy, Tahoi," he muttered and turned to look at the lady knight.
"Move, boy," snapped the King's Champion as she stood with her arms crossed over her chest.
"No," he replied, meeting her angry gaze and ignoring a frantic tug on his sleeve. "That's my sister you'd be shouting after and folk've treated Daine and me poorly before. Not again, Your Ladyship." The tugs on his sleeve became forceful, and he yanked his clothing free of what had to be Daine's grasp.
"Folk aren't your slaves, to jump when you say so," he said, wondering if she'd strike him down for this, "and you can't treat 'em like that."
The woman paused; then she relaxed and dropped her arms down by her sides, and then even smiled crookedly. "Ah. Twins. I should know better. Lad, I'm sorry. I need your sister's help."
"If she wants to help you, she will."
"Dren, stop." Daine slowly emerged from behind him, no longer half-hidden within the herd of ponies. "'m sorry, mum. Lioness."
"I need your help—Daine, is it?" The Lioness asked, her voice calm now.
Daine only nodded and reached down to scratch Tahoi's ears.
"Daine. Come along, then—I won't bite."
"If she goes, I go," Dren warned.
"I expected as much," the lady said, with a nod. "You've done well to look after each other."
