Title: Loose
Rating: PG
Summary: Clary's got a new bracelet.
Warning: Really minor spoilers for Bloodhound.
“That’s a nice bracelet, I don’t think I’ve seen it before.”
Clary looked at her wrist, admiring the bracelet again herself. “You haven’t, it’s new.” She wondered if he’d get angry because he thought she was spending their money on jewellery. “There was a good haul in the Happy Bag this week,” she lied, feeling defensive. “I work hard at a thankless job, I deserve a treat every now and then.” That much was certainly true. If there were a few Rats who wanted to give her some extra coin, what was the sense in turning it away? She was sure to find some good use for it, like the bracelet, and the cloth for a new dress, and the pretty satin slippers she’d bought herself.
Tom smiled at her. “Of course you do, Clary. I know how much you like pretty things, and I’m glad that you can have them.” He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her. “It’s nice that there was more to go around in the Happy Bag this week. I must say, I was worried for a moment that you’d turned crooked or sommat!”
Clary stiffened, feeling as though he’d struck her when he unwittingly spoke the truth. “Don’t be a looby, Tomlan,” she forced herself to say. “You know I’d never do anything like that.”
“I know,” he replied, and kissed her on the cheek. “I’ll go and take a bath then, get all this sawdust off me.”
He strode out of the room, whistling, and leaving Clary staring at her new bracelet again. Somehow, it didn’t look quite so pretty anymore.
