Summary: Daine introduces Onua to Lindhall.
“It’s just through here. Look, that’s where the turtles are going to go. The mages are working on their habitats now. Isn’t it huge?”
Onua could see why Daine was so excited about the menagerie. It really was huge, and the mages were making each enclosure resemble exactly the habitats that each animal came from. Daine had told her that the animals were perfectly happy, especially since most of them came from areas where humans had been destroying their natural habitats.
Onua realised that Daine was waving to someone, and looked up to see a man standing there.
“It’s Lindhall,” explained Daine. Once they had reached him, Daine performed introductions. To Onua’s complete surprise, Lindhall picked her hand up and kissed it. She blushed, and Daine giggled.
“Actually,” the wildmage said. “I just remembered that Stefan wanted to see me about a horse for one of the pages. I’ll see you both later.” She left them both alone.
“I hear you have some wild magic too,” remarked Lindhall in the silence that followed.
Onua nodded. “Just a little.”
“Fascinating,” he remarked. “Now that we know what it is, it seems to be popping up everywhere. I’ve heard plenty about you from Numair and Daine, but neither of them mentioned how beautiful you are.”
She blinked, surprised at the sudden shift in the conversation, and then gave a dry laugh. Clearly, he was either lying or delusional.
“You don’t believe me,” he accused. She shook her head and forced another laugh, acting as though she didn’t care whether anyone thought she was beautiful or not. Of course she didn’t believe him. Even after all these years she could list her faults as easily as if he was still standing over her, listing them himself and mocking her.
“You’ve been hurt,” Lindhall observed gently. “Somebody broke your heart.”
How could he tell something like that so easily? “More than you’d guess,” she heard herself answering, and immediately cursed at herself for telling him that much. There was something about him that made her want to keep on talking…but she wasn’t going to let that happen. “Is this where the turtles will be going?” she asked, deliberately changing the subject.
“Some of them,” he answered. “The others will be through here, with the giant tortoises.” He walked towards an open doorway and beckoned for her to follow. “We’ve done a lot more work on this one already. The pond and waterways are already finished, and the trees are all in place. They’re growing up very nicely. All that’s really left to do is sort the climate out, and then introduce the turtles and tortoises.”
The trees had been growing too well for Onua’s liking. She realised with discomfort that the trees were hiding them from the view of anyone who might be walking past, and instinctively edged away from him.
This didn’t escape Lindhall’s attention. “You don’t trust me, do you?”
She looked away. “We only just met. And you’re a mage.”
She heard him chuckle. “My magic is for plants and animals. I can’t even do anything impressive like turn you into an apple tree.”
She looked at him and gave a small smile. “You heard about that?”
“Yes,” he answered, and smiled back. “Nevertheless, you are right. Please forgive me, I was caught up in my enthusiasm. It was most indecent of me to bring you to such a secluded area.” He scratched his head and she scuffed her foot. She hoped he wouldn’t think she disliked him…she just needed a chance to get to know him on her terms.
“Would you like to meet my dog Tahoi?” she asked shyly. “He usually comes everywhere with me, but I thought he’d better stay away from the menagerie.”
His smile was warm and genuine, and it reached his eyes. “I’d like that.” He gave a small bow and held his arm out for her. Blushing she carefully took it, and they set off.

He seemed to be having fun with Tahoi. The large dog certainly seemed to like him well enough, and that pleased Onua. Tahoi was a good judge and indicator of character. She hoped Lindhall hadn’t thought her rude when she’d let go of his arm once they were within sight of the Rider barracks. She wasn’t ready to have anyone assuming anything…yet.
Lindhall gave Tahoi a final pat and straightened. “He’s a fine dog.”
She smiled. “I’m lucky to have a friend like him.”
“And he’s lucky to have a friend like you.” She blushed and looked at her feet. “Are you coming to the ball tonight?” he asked, again changing the subject rather abruptly.
She hadn’t planned on it, she generally avoided going to the balls if she could. She felt out of place and awkward. But…he had been very nice, and she didn’t really have anything better to do.
Tahoi apparently decided to help things along by nudging her hard enough that she stumbled into him.
She immediately stammered out an apology, telling him that Tahoi was feeling particularly energetic today. She knew that she was blushing outrageously as she disentangled herself from him.
He smiled at her again. “Well, I’ll hope to see you again tonight. It would be wonderful if you came to the ball.” He ambled off, leaving Onua to wonder how on earth she was going to find a pretty dress before tonight.
